5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
My three year old got this for his birthday. The whole family has enjoyed it and has been fascinated by it. We considered using the ants from the backyard but I'm glad we chose to send for the ones that come with the ant farm. Those ones are much bigger and cannot escape from the ant farm. The tricky part is getting them in the farm. We had ant mayhem for a while...

3.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Science Fair Project
We purchased the Uncle Milton Extrem Ant Farm for our daughter's school Science Fair. The ant farm worked out wonderfully. The ants made all their tunnels just as pictured. Further, the ants do NOT escape and in this farm they are easy to feed. We purchased our... cheaper then the certificate price that come with the Ant Farm and quicker shipment.

You will not regret getting this one. I'm purchasing a second one for my friend's son.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN, January 9, 2004

THE ANT FARM IS GREAT FUN TO WATCH AND OBSERVE THE ANTS. IF YOU READ THE LITERATURE YOU KNOW THE ANTS WILL EVENTUALLY DIE. I PURCHASED THIS AS A CHRISTMAS GIFT AND KNEW THE ANTS WOULD HAVE TO BE ORDERED, THIS DOESN'T SEEM TOO FUN TO GET A GIFT THAT WILL NOT WORK. I WENT ON LINE AND BOUGHT ANTS FROM LIFE STUDIES, ONLY $2.50 FOR 25 ANTS OR $3.50 FOR 50 ANTS AND ONLY $0.50 FOR S&H, CAN'T BEAT IT. THE ANTS CAME WITHIN APPROXIMATELY 10 DAYS AND I HAD TO WAIT ANOTHER WEEK FOR CHRISTMAS AND THEY WERE STILL ALL ALIVE WITH ONE OAT AND ONE DROP OF WATER I ADDED. THERE ARE STILL 10 ANTS OUT OF 25 ALIVE AT THIS TIME, BUT I FEEL THEY ARE VERY EASY TO REPLACE, JUST DON'T FORGET TO PUT THE ANTS IN THE REFRIGERRATOR FOR 10 MINUTES BEFORE PLACING THEM IN THE ANT FARM OR YOU WILL HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME CORRALLING THEM (THANKS TO NOT READING INSTRUCTIONS BY MY HONEY WHO WAS TOO EXCITED) BUT NONE OF THESE BIG ANTS BIT US AND WE HANDLED THEM PLENTY.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kids Love it - Ants last about 3 weeks, October 13, 2003

My kids love this toy - we bought extra tubing at the Home and Garden Store in our city and let the ants go up and down a spiral tunnel we made around a bottle and they thought that was great. Only two complaints on this one - the ants don't live very long (but maybe that is an added bonus for some parents!) and we actaully got a Queen. They say you are not going to get one, but we did (and I had it verified) what was sad was once she died the ants almost quit working altogether and they died within a week of her death. Otherwise, fun toy, my kids loved it and the ants came in quickly for us. (Maybe 4 weeks)

3.0 out of 5 stars Ants in your pants, November 12, 2003

This is a very educational toy and fascinating to watch. My three year old grandaughter told me she had "ants in her pants" while anxiously awaiting her ants from Uncle Milton's farm. Most arrived alive. They began working right away, but seemed to have no direction without a queen. They would build, destroy their structures and build again. It's sad that the ants don't live very long. However, that too is an education in community as they also created a graveyard where they buried the dearly departed.

We got the ants, followed the instructions etc. The first few days my son enjoyed it. They really dug tunnels and worked very hard. But by day 4 they just started dying off. At the end of the first week all the ants were dead. If they could have just lasted a little longer I might recommend this product but its just a waste for a few short days.

We ordered one in January. However, we just got the ants in late April. (The company doesn't ship ants until the weather warms, plan accordingly), When the ants finally arrived my 6 year old and 3 year old were so exicted. The ants got right to work and have tunneled all through the entire village. We love to watch them race through the tubes to get to the other village. My sons call this the ant highway. We have learned so much by watching them. They are truly hard workers. We learned some life lessons with the dead ones too. It's amazing how the ants take care of their dead. Great educational toy and very entertaining.

My daughter's enjoyment of the arm farm will surely be diminished by the memories of her mother's bad temper while assmebling it. I had a really hard time getting the center piece together; the water went straight through the farm, soaking my coffee table and pants (directions say that some leakage is possible); there wasn't enough "sand" to fill the container as the instructions directed. It probably took me 30 grouchy minutes to get the farm set up. Also, I knew this was a possibility, but ants did not arrive for 2 months.

These are great, but they can be brittle, I have had escapees running around before. The common problem with ants dieing off so quick is because you need a queen ant to produce more ants as the others die off. Fortunately ants are very common in my area and i can go for a 5 minute walk and dig up a queen and a good sum of worker ants and just transport them to the ant farm. Its fun to come back day everyday and see what they have done, great value.
