2.0 out of 5 stars Not illuminated as stated in description!
This ant farm is not illuminated as the description says. If you are looking for an illuminated one, don't buy this one!! I informed them & they stated that they are out of the illuminated, but they still have not changed their description of the item!!

This ant farm is lots of fun! We paid a little extra and had the company send us ants. They were big ants and that made it easy to see their body parts. The ant farm is really great b/c it illuminates and you can watch them at night. We sent this to my son's 1st grade class and the kids LOVED it! What a fun way to learn about animals.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Ants, January 12, 2012

My parents got me this ant farm for Christmas because I always wanted one as a kid. I'm glad I didn't have one then! This thing is horrible! My ants arrived quickly, but half of them were dead. I made the starter holes as the directions said to do, but my ants are NOT tunneling. It's been a week now, and they seem to be getting weaker and weaker. The gel has been picked apart a bit at the top, but they're not even trying to tunnel. If anything, they're trying to ESCAPE. Over the past few days, they seemed more and more determined to find a way out of the top of the farm... today, most of them seem barely alive. I'll be setting them free tomorrow morning if there's no evidence that they're making tunnels by then. This is not so much an ant farm as an ant execution chamber. Most depressing Christmas gift I've ever received. Glad I'm not a kid!

5.0 out of 5 stars We have a fantastic Experience, September 21, 2011

We ordered for our daughter (budding young biologist). It was fantastic...

I saw other review about problems, but we had none. We purchased the kit, sent in for the ants (which we received regular updates), made the holes, received the ants, put the ants in the farm, KEPT the farm in a "protected" area. They do not like a lot of light or changes in temperature. Instructions said the ants would live for about 3 months and it was close to that when finally they all died. Lots of great tunnels too.

I personally thought the whole thing was rather ingenious. No worries about them escaping either.

My ONLY complaint is after two sets of ants, there isn't much gel left. I wish they would sell a refill kit for the gel, but they don't. So I am off to purchase a new one.

I purchased this for my 9 year old for Christmas. He was so excited. After paying for our "free" ants we waited and waited for the e mail the company said would be sent upon shipment of the ants. Never received this e mail so we were greeted by a vial of dead ants. E mailed company which sent more ants and shipping e mail. Finally we put batteries in. Light never worked properly. We made the starter holes anyway and put the ants in. Ants tunneled for a couple of days then just gave up, piled on top of each other trying to get out, then started dying. My son waited almost 3 months for this disappointment. Don't buy this piece of poop!

1.0 out of 5 stars Ants die, and do not tunnel!, March 4, 2011

This is the most disappointing waste of money ever. We bought this for my homeschooler's science lab. The ants took weeks to arrive, then about half of them were dead when we got the ants in the mail. We have had about one ant die every couple days over the past 2 weeks since we got them. The ants do not tunnel. They huddle up on top on the green gel in the middle and barely move. You are told to make tunnel starters, but the ants do not attempt to tunnel with them at all. Very very disappointed. Don't waste your money.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste!!!, April 4, 2011
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Uncle Milton Illuminated Ant Farm Gel Colony (Toy)
My sister bought this for my sons 3rd birthday and it didn't perform at all like expected.
We got it, used the enclosed plastic tunnel maker, and ordered our ants. When our ants
arrived they were all alive (which I guess was uncommon based on others reviews) and they
didn't tunnel. Two of the ants went down the tunnels we made and died in them. I
tried making the tunnels a little wider and connecting them myself but it didn't help.

I think it is a design flaw. The top portion is a long strip of plastic that snaps on
and off of the ant farm. I think it allows to much air and the gel gets to hard to fast
for them to use. I bought another ant farm hoping it was just a problem with mine but
the same exact thing happened. After about a week of seeing them flounder I added water
hoping that would help them but they all just died.

Very sad. I am glad my son is only 3 so he didn't entirely realize that they were dying.
Poor ants, I wish I would have just let them go and fend for themselves but I was
really hoping it would work the second time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead Ant Delivery, January 25, 2012
= Durability:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Uncle Milton Illuminated Ant Farm Gel Colony (Toy)
The toy appeared very cool and my kid was very excited. However you have to order the ants through Uncle Milton. The delivery once the order is placed can take up to 6 weeks and you have to pay an additional $5.00 to place this order and have it shipped. The ants come in the mail via UPS in a small plastic container. When we received ours they were mixed with the mail. There was no special handling and all of the ents were dead. The ants were of significant large size. We had to contact Uncle Milton again and inform them about the situation only to receive an email that said. We will respond within 5 business days. The process of getting live ants seems a bit cumbersome. It may be easier if there was a local provided they could point one to to avoid the communication and delivery hazzle. How do you explain this kind of logistics to a 9 year old who can't wait to see his toy in action?

I had an ant farm as a child so I bought this one for my 3 year old to see...I ordered the ants off the internet coupon and they arrived in about a week (despite packaging saying expect a 6-8 week ship time). All but one ant survived the journey from California to New Jersey, however after about a week the ants look sluggish and about half are dead. They haven't really used the holes i dug for them to tunnel much so far. We will see how it goes. My only commplaint is it's smaller than I expected it to be, however it's my fault for not checking dimensions.
