Uncle Milton's "Mars in My Room" was a bit under-whelming compared with what I was expecting but that said it does look nice on the wall. You must be in near total darkness to see it light up though. In terms of educational content, really the only thing it explains/shows are the 4 previous Mars mission landings: Mars 3 (1971), Viking 2 (1976), Spirit (2004) and Curiosity (2012). And just bullet points for those. I made a short video review with more details.

My 10 year old daughter is in love with astronomy. So when this arrived and she first saw it, I wish you could have seen the excitement and wonder in her eyes when I told it was for hanging in her room.

She sat looking at it for a little bit, analyzing the artistry, and commented that it definitely looks like what she has studied about Mars. She also really appreciated being able to label where the probes landed, and the cards that came with this that explain about each probe.

From my point of view, this was easy to open, easy to install batteries, easy to hang. She loves having the remote by her bedside to turn it on, so she can fall asleep looking at it. I appreciate that it turns off after 30 minutes to save battery life.

Other than turning on & off, this doesn't do anything else, like show phases of shadowing from passing around the sun. This may not hold the attention of many kids - I'd say it is really only for an astronomy fan.

Now she is interested in eventually getting the Uncle Milton Moon In My Room, adding it to her Christmas wish list.

Update 11/21/2013: It has been two months since we put this up. My daughter has used it almost every night, and I wanted to report that the batteries are still going strong.

Well, First, Uncle Milton's Mars is cool as far as how it looks in a room at night. It is basically like a big nightlight you can turn on and off with the remote. Second, Is it educational? It is, but not much. A child could remember the name of the big red planet because of this toy and can also see a few dots of light on it where the land rover science vehicle made stops, but other than that....anything learned from it would have to be from other material. Third, would I recommend this to someone? I would recommend it as a really cool night light and decorative toy in a bedroom. I really wouldn't recommend it for someone who wanted to learn lots about Mars.

The Uncle Milton Mars in My Room looks really cool. Who wouldn't want a light up Mars on their wall or better yet, ceiling? The image they used to craft the model is very detailed and you can easily imagine this is the view you would see as an explorer approaching Mars from space.

Unfortunately, one can only look at it with that initial sense of wonder once. As you get closer, the detail isn't as great as it looks from a distance. The actual image on the model itself is much darker than it appears in the image on the website. After that, we found ourselves wondering what more there was to this toy. While it is cool to see where the different probes landed on the planet, it would be nice if there was more information. Where did they go from there?

Overall: 3 stars. This is a cool model that could be cooler. I'm not sure I would call it a toy at all.

This is a Mars nightlight, with a few spots showing the location of some robotic landers.

It isn't very bright, so you can only really see it if the room is dark. But it is a nice brightness for a nightlight, not so bright that it keeps everyone awake.

It can only be turned on with the remote control. There is a switch on the back that can be used to turn it hard off, but generally they're expecting you to use the remote to turn if off too. The remote would be nice in some situations where you can't easily reach the light, but it would be nice to have a button on the light itself in case you can't find the remote control.

It has a single keyhole style slot on the back for hanging the light from a nail or screw. No nail or screw is included.

It requires 4 AA batteries for the light and 2 AAA batteries for the remote control.

The Uncle Milton Mars in my Room is quite adequate when taken as a whole.

Out of the box, you might think it is too flimsy or cheap feeling. But it's designed to be hung on the wall, so being light benefits it. Also, you load 4 AAs into it and you soon realize its no longer as light as you think. Such a great idea for the remote too as one can lay in bed and enjoy it to their leisure. The brightness I find perfect too as I plan on collecting the series if they make all the bodies in our solar system. A great product for astronomy lovers of all ages.

This looks nice hanging on the wall and I like the illumination and its remote control which makes it very convenient but found it "light" on educational value. It does have a few pinpoints to show where Mars Rovers have landed though they look like defects in some ways.
We all agreed it has more values as a decorative item than educational. It did not keep anyone's attention for more than two minutes and nobody was particularly interested in the cheapo stickers and cards.
I like the idea of this but not enough thought went into this (from an educational point of view....)

I think three stars is about right...but also think the current $30 price is about twice its real value!
