5.0 out of 5 stars Neat
Planets rotate on 2 tracks to give the illusion that the planets are all moving at different speeds (an effective illusion).

It would have been nice if the ring of Saturn were semi translucent plastic rather than cardboard.

Since Pluto has been downgraded from planetary status you can perhaps hang the Star Trek Enterprise orbiting the outer solar...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Looks...Function Fair
I purchased this for my 3 year old son's new Space-Themed room...He Loves it...It's Very cool looking...However...the construction is pretty flimsy, and It absolutely GOBBLES C batteries...so it will light up, but often will not turn...unless you're willing to change the batteries about every 3 days! Also, prepare to put pretty large holes in the ceiling for this product...

Since Pluto has been downgraded from planetary status you can perhaps hang the Star Trek Enterprise orbiting the outer solar system, the Borg cube, or the Death Star (the geek potential is high with this...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Really neat!, December 27, 2006
This review is from: Uncle Milton Solar System In My Room (Toy)
This is really neat. It lights up and spins and all that good stuff. The "comet maker" is really only a tiny flashlight... and be prepared to put some pretty good size holes in your ceiling... but it is a great thing to watch and very educational when used with the soundtrack.

2.0 out of 5 stars One HUGE Flaw, December 9, 2007

I bought this prodct for my son's nursery. I was so excited to receive it (I want him to be an astronaut when he grows up) I was pleased with putting it together and hanging it, would have been better if it fit over an existing light ceiling fixture. The worst part is that the electric motor in it is LOUD!!! You can't even hear the audio disc that came with it unless you turn it up VERY loud. Needless to say I was really bummed, but way too lazy to return it and get my money back. Probably why its only 30 bucks. You also can't turn on the light without the planets orbit motor on.

flimsy. I bent wires to hold planets on, then glues other end of wire into base, otherwise, planets can fall off easily. Motor is so loud I wonder if I got a lemon, but someone else complained of this too. The moon is cool, but battery door came broken....planet decals torn. Overall quality less than usual for Costco....but looks really cool nontheless!

This toy is a piece of junk. There is a requirement that it be toggle-bolted into the ceiling with two toggle-bolts (provided) and the ceiling must be one of drywall. So if you give your child or grandchild this toy and you have a wood ceiling, forget about it! And who wants to toggle-bolt something to their ceiling and WHY DON'T THEY MAKE THAT CLEAR BEFORE YOU GIVE IT TO THE CHILD??? Our solar system is sitting on our coffee table, the remote control that makes it revolve is already broken. I emailed the company about alternative ways to hang the item and never heard back.

I suppose if you have the right kind of ceiling and are an owner (not a renter) and you know up front that you are going to drill holes, it might work out. Otherwise, buy something else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps 3 year-old in bed!, January 2, 2008
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Uncle Milton Solar System In My Room (Toy)
We got this for our 3 year-old son and it has helped with the bedtime battles. He is staying in bed watching his planets. We read the reviews before purchasing so were prepared for the noisy motor, and it really isn't loud enough to be distractive - both our kids have fallen asleep with it on. The main features I like are the glow of the sun - perfect for a night-light, the movement of the planets that entertain, and the 15 minute shut-off feature. My main gripe about the product is the battery power it takes. Three C batteries and those didn't even last a week! So this will be an expensive product to keep working. Overall I recommend this product.

The Uncle Milton Light-up Solar System is awesome in design but horrible in function. It looks great and works far less than expected. Despite many battery changes and following the advice of the Uncle Milton staff, it just doesn't work for more than 15 seconds. Just to get it to revolve it must be hand started. The very few times after it was first installed it did work and my son was enchanted. [...]

I love it, and my son does too. It is quite loud -- I could maybe replace the motor.... But he runs it for 20 minutes as he's falling asleep, and the noise level seems to be ok for him. The solar system shuts off after 20 minutes and the moon shuts off after 30 min, so it works well as a pre-bedtime thing. When I saw the photo on the box, I assumed it went over the room lamp, but it doesn't. You need to drill two holes in the ceiling to mount it (really one would do). Also, I recommend using the next size up drill bit -- 3/8". I bent the (cheap) toggle bolt trying to install.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth about 10 bucks not 20, August 17, 2008

We actually purchased this light from our local hobby lobby store. It was marked down from 30.00 to 20.00. It was pretty easy to put together and screw to the ceiling..however like others said it is loud and mechanical sounding. The light is VERY dim, I'm pretty sure our plug in night light is brighter. The only problem I have with this is the noise and the fact that it sits too close to the ceiling. I wish they would make something like this that could be wired in directly to light switch.

I am not going to take it down and return it. I think it should be about a 10 dollar light NOT the 30.00 orig price.
