A quick read for school aged children, fun story to expand the imagination and provoke a little thought. Nice illustrations mixed with text and worth the investment...sure to be a favorite! Service was very good and the quality was as advertized.

Two parts heart and one part adventure, Uncle Pirate is sure to make kids read this story over and over again. They'll be saying "No Mollymockery" at the dinner table and searching the back yard for buried treasure. Doug Rees weaves a magical tale of an undersized bully target, Wilson, who rises to the occasion when his peg-leg Uncle pirate turns up with an Emperor penguin, Captain Jack, in tow and hilarity ensues. Here's a book to go on your keeper shelf!

My son liked it but it was a tad older reading than my 6 y/o only because the way the pirate in the books speaks is a bit hard to follow when reading it aloud... Witty, fun book though!

my 6 year old and I just finished this book and we loved it. Desperate Wicked Evil Bob and his sidekick penguin Capt Jack are spectacular. my daughter said she wished she had uncle pirate as her uncle. I want capt jack as my friend. I loved the depiction of Carla, a student who was a year behind because of her reading skills. By tutoring Capt Jack in reading (yes, the penguin learns to read) she actually increases her reading skills and feels better about herself. what's great is that you don't actually notice the touchy-feely stuff because you're so busy laughing. Also the mom and dad in the story are realistic-the family lives in a condo and worries about money. their son constantly breaks his glasses and knows it costs big bucks for his family. Can't wait to read the sequel! (for those interested, I'd say the reading level is about DRA 28-30, guided reading level M/N).

Uncle Pirate is an uncle lots of us would love to have come knocking on the door. His penguin is a star. Its a fun read for boys, girls, youngsters and oldsters. The characters are gnarly-enough without being violent or evil. It's a cheer for friendship, cooperation, and education.

Wilson's mother is making Bad News Pie. That's bad news. It is really pumpkin pie, but Wilson's mom only makes it when she has bad news. What could it be this time?
Wilson's mom hands his dad a letter from the Navy. They have found Wilson's uncle, an uncle he never knew he had, marooned on an island near Antarctica. He had only a fishing pole and a penguin with him when he was found. The Navy is sending them to Wilson's house (yes, the penguin, too!). They barely finish the letter when there is a knock at the door. There stands Wilson's uncle--and he's a pirate! The pirate, Desperate Evil Wicked Bob, and his talking penguin, Captain Jack, are now living with Wilson and his family. How does a pirate learn to live a normal life? Uncle Pirate attempts to hold a regular job, as a gardener and in a coffee shop, but nothing is as easy as it seems. And now, Captain Jack wants to go to school. A penguin in school? Very Elementary isn't even the nicest school in town. Things are out of control and even the principal hides under his desk from the bullies. Soon, Uncle Pirate is at school, too, and things start to look up for Wilson. Can Uncle Pirate fit in at school and with Wilson's family? Things are certainly more interesting since he's come. UNCLE PIRATE is a fun story for kids ages 7-10. It is silly and even the youngest readers will find their pirate "voice." Before long, the entire family will be walking through the house uttering, "argh" in a pirate voice. Reviewed by: JodiG.

What a great book!,

"Uncle Pirate" is a wonderful book, funny and engaging right from the Bad News Pie at the beginning and long-lost Uncle Captain Desperate Evil Wicked Bob's descent on his nephew Willard's household, to his even more delightful descent on his nephew's horrible school. The transformation Uncle Pirate wreaks on everything he encounters is laugh-out-loud funny and the ending is great. The book is beautifully written, the illustrations are lovely. And kids should like it too.
