This time, we travel to the outer edges of its imagination, where we visit Robin Hood, Chicken Little, and other stars of modern and modernized mythology. That includes the modern myth of the hard-boiled noir, neatly deflated by Kelly's "The Bloody Drip." This charming but brief book combines satire with parables and poetry. Bad poetry, I admit, but so bad that it begs to be read again and again. In short, there's not a lot of substance here. Or maybe there is - just as much as you bring to its reading. Pogo is an American classic. Even his "so-so" stories stand tall, though almost forgotten. It's silly and charming and makes you wish we could go back to those simpler times. Well, not really, since they were as screwed up as our times and maybe more. Being screwed up shouldn't interfere with a happy life, though, and Pogo is always happy. //wiredweird |
