5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF THE BEST !, July 9, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Uncle Scrooge Vs. Flintheart Glomgold : The Second Richest Duck (Gladstone Giant Album Comic Series, No. 4) (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Ser. : No. 4) (Paperback)
This huge comic album is great and is loaded with good long stories. The theme of the album is Uncle Scrooge versus his nemesis Flintheart Glomgold, the second richest duck in the world. It has four long and really good stories in it. In the first story Scrooge and his nephews go to Africa to see if Glomgold is richer than Scrooge is. Then they become involved in a fierce contest to see who is the richest duck. In the second story Scrooge and Glomgold get in another contest to see who is richer when they change all there money into silver dollars and measure the piles. But the cheating Glomgold is up to no good. The third story is safari/adventure themed with Scrooge and his nephews in the wilds of Africa trying to beat Glomgold to an important auction. And in the fourth story Scrooge and his nephews race towards the Inca gold high in the Andes so they can try to get to it before the pursuing Flintheart Glomgold can. These were very good high quality stories with better color on the pages compared to other comic albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars More wacky McDuck brilliance, November 17, 2008

This review is from: Uncle Scrooge Vs. Flintheart Glomgold : The Second Richest Duck (Gladstone Giant Album Comic Series, No. 4) (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Ser. : No. 4) (Paperback)
This giant-sized volume of Gladstone Publishing's Disney series highlights the rivalry between the world's richest duck, Uncle Scrooge, and his nemesis, South African tycoon Flintheart Glomgold. Flintheart first appears in the 1956 Carl Barks saga, "The Second Richest Duck," in which the two misers are so evenly matched they resort to comparing the size of two balls of string that they've saved over the years... It's a pretty funny premise, and the story whizzes along at a brisk pace. Two more Barks gems are included, "The Money Champ" from 1958 and "So Far No Safari," from 1965. The fourth story, 1987's "The Son Of The Sun," is by Carl Barks acolyte Don Rosa -- in it, Scrooge and Glomgold race to discover a hidden Inca treasure, affording Rosa the chance to show his skill as a draftsman.

Although the first story is pretty innocuous, the later stories get a bit dark -- Glomgold cheats wildly and tries to kill the other ducks in a variety of ways, including a lot of pointed (and fired) guns. Still, this is basically about as wholesome and high-class of family entertainment as you can find these days -- great stories from two master cartoonists! 5.0 out of 5 stars list of 3 by Carl Barks, 1 by Don Rosa, December 2, 2010
This review is from: Uncle Scrooge Vs. Flintheart Glomgold : The Second Richest Duck (Gladstone Giant Album Comic Series, No. 4) (Gladstone Giant Comic Album Ser. : No. 4) (Paperback)
The first 3 stories are by Carl Barks:
1) "The Second Richest Duck" first printed in Dell Comics Uncle Scrooge #12 of 1956. This story marks the first appearance of Flintheart Glomgold, a character created by Barks as a Nemesis to Scrooge. The story is known to duck fans for its ball of string race. 20 pages long, art & script by Carl Barks
2) "The Money Champ" reprinted from Dell Comics Uncle Scrooge #27 of 1958. Scrooge and Flintheart face off again, in a story that is essentially a sequel to the first story. The 2 tycoons have a contest to measure their wealth in this 22 page story. Art & script by Carl Barks.
3) "So Far and No Safari" reprinted from Uncle Scrooge Gold Key Comics #61 of 1965, in this story the competitive nature of Flintheart takes a turn for the worse as he plays a small but very villainous role in a story about the Junior Woodchuck whistles that tame any animal. 24 pages. Art & script by Carl Barks.
Don Rosa takes up the ducks next:
4) "The Son of the Sun" from Uncle Scrooge 219 in 1987. In this 26 page story by modern Duck artist Don Rosa, loaded with references and in-jokes to classic Barks stories, has a new battle with Flintheart.

All in all a great set of themed stories lovingly compiled and reprinted by Gladstone, and getting more rare every day. These Duck stories are very addicting. This is another great comic album from Gladstone Comics, who specialized in Disney comics with reprints of classic Carl Barks as well as new stories by artist like the great Don Rosa. The high quality paper and ink used in these books, along with the great lengths they went to in order to get the books just right for the fans, developed a loyal following for Gladstone. They had several series of publication, and this book was from the Giant Specials. 11" tall, and very thick, this issue is themed to Scrooges battles against Flintheart Glomgold, another wealthy tycoon. The battle for the title of Worlds Richest Duck has occurred a few times in the Disney world of ducks. And Scrooge always won, but he had a fight getting there against a competition that would stoop to anything to sabotage Uncle Scrooge. Terrific grouping of stories by Gladstone comics, this 1989 printing is highly recommended for adult readers reliving the old Duck stories, and for the kids to make new discoveries.
