Good, but not for everyone,
By A Customer
This review is from: Uncle Vampire (Library Binding)
I read this book as a incredibly sheltered 12-year old and did not quite grasp what was going on. The bombshell at the end traumatized me for days. I don't think it was the best way for me to learn about such horrors, and it was not the way my parents wanted me to learn about it (they bought the book thinking it was about vampires). For others (less innocent, older, or more mature than I was) it is probably a very important book. As realistic as it is, be forewarned that it is also very disturbing.

Don't turn away,
By Susan Kester (Michigan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Uncle Vampire (Library Binding)
I read this book after someone I highly respect told me about this "horrible book" her middle school son was reading. She had gone to the school and wanted it removed from the library. I was concerned (same school my son will be going to in a couple years) and I thought I needed to read it for myself. Not only was she wrong about it not belonging in the school library, her "garbage" description (based on one disciminately used F word) was unfounded. The writing was as compelling as the story itself. How can this woman not see how incredibly important a book like this is! With all the things in life that our kids are exposed to in "the wrong way," this is a book that can expose kids to reality "the right way."

I had this book back in 7th grade and I used to read it over and over. It is one of those books that really stick on your mind and tear at you after reading it. I lent it out to friends who passed it around. We made it a thing to sign the book after we read it each time. I had peoples signatures I never even knew. So, now the internets around I figured search for it.So I did. And FINALLY found it here. This book is written beautifully and is wonderfully dark with an underlaying message of hope through even the darkest of times.

Outstanding Book That Heals Internal Pain,
By A Customer
This review is from: Uncle Vampire (Library Binding)
This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I was sexual abused when I was very young. I never talked about it until high school when a bunch of my friends came out with their stories of sexual abuse and assualt. I read this book when I first began to talk about my ordeal. It took me a while to even say the sexual abuse. This book helped get through the beginnig stages of my healing. My friend gave it to me because it help her also. This girl in the story went through almost everything I went through, but I had no one to talk to then. Or at least that is what I thought. Today I am a better and stronger person and this book helped me, in a small but needed way to get through that dark door and start the internal healing. I finally have moved on with my life. I feel that every girl that has been through a traumatic situation such as rape or molestion should defintely read this book. It won't make things all better, but it will help you get there. Sincerly, A victim turned survivor.

Unforgettable,

Stunning, brilliant ... there are no words strong enough to describe this compelling, heart-wrenching novel. Carolyn suffers so much abuse that finally she decides nothing could be worse than telling the truth about her uncle's physical and mental abuse. If you or your friends read one book this year, this is it. All libraries should have at least one copy in circulation.

Uncle Vampire,

This review is from: Uncle Vampire (Paperback)
I thought that the book was amazing because you'll be so surprised how the ends.I could never have seen it coming, I really thought it whould end in another way. I think it is a very well written book despite that you don't always know if Carolyn is dreaming, thinking, or if it is the reality....I whould recommend anyone to read it because it isn't like every other book it really surprise you!

I loved this book very much. I think it teaches a great lesson and will/has encouraged people who go through the same horrors. However - you really didn't understand a lot until the BANG at the end. Then it becomes clear and you relilze what this book is really about. AWSOME BOOK!

Who believes in vampires?!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Uncle Vampire (Paperback)
At first I wasn't too excited about reading this book. I mean come on, vampires? Who believes in them, your 4 year old brother? Well, after reading this book I can say I do. It is a very serious topic. I feel for Carolyn in many ways. Talking about Carolyn, she is not alone. She has her twin sister, Honey. Honey is very busy and very popular. She has cheerleading, homecoming queen, dates, friends, and her piano lessons. They are both clearly aware of the problem with their uncle Toddy, who lives with them. With all the other activities Honey has, her uncle Toddy is not interfering with them! She would rather just try to think positive and ignore the problem. But it really bothers Carolyn. She just can't live sanely with this going on. Pretty soon uncle Toddy will have them drained dry of their blood. It seems like everything is falling apart, like her brothers grades are dropping. He is on drugs and also pretends he does not see what's going on with Carolyn, Honey, and their uncle. Carolyn desperately wants to tell someone. She thinks about telling her sister, Maggie, who isn't living at home. Maybe even her parents, but who believes in vampires, right? They might think she's crazy and surely won't believe her. Besides a few confusing situations, this is an easy to read book. It's very educational and lets you know you and your "vampires" are not alone. There is help. This is an interesting book; it tells you a haunting story that will touch your heart. I really recommend it to every young teenager.
