Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

For Jimi and Jodi, accompanying Uncle Wizzmo on his annual expedition to purchase a new used car is always a treat: one trip through these zany pages will show why. The ride to the car lot is filled with diverting attractions, including the town of Snookersburg, Burgerworld (where Uncle Wizzmo treats his niece and nephew to french fries) and finally the booming metropolis of Fleeberville--home of Turnpike Larry's used car lot. Larry, "a friendly sort of guy," shows them some wild four-wheeled contraptions, including a car that looks like a turtle, one that resembles a bunny and even one shaped like a bowl of fruit. Finally, Uncle Wizzmo makes his choice (a more conventional model), and the car-buying adventure ends for another year. In his first picture book for children, Greenblat displays a rich--and extremely colorful--imagination. Youngsters will get a kick out of the silly vehicles, and may even beg their parents to check out Turnpike Larry's selection before buying the next family car. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 --Uncle Wizzmo buys a new used car every spring, taking his niece and nephew with him. The trip to the city is described, followed by the selection of the car and the trip home. This lightweight plot is fleshed out with many pages of exaggerated, ludicrous cars--one resembling a turtle, another a bunny, or a third looking like a bowl of fruit. The satire, such as "making the deal," will be lost on children, although they'll probably laugh appreciatively at the cars. The jazzy, cartoonlike illustrations combine folk-art styles and perspectives with space-age colors and objects--a bit like Grandma Moses gone whacko. They're fun and they're trendy, but they're not enough to carry a story that depends on exclamation points for excitement and has little emotional meaning. Thin on content, thick on paint. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Dept . of Education, Montpelier

4.0 out of 5 stars Whimical and silly, this one is a family favorite., December 16, 1998

This review is from: Uncle Wizzmo's New Used Car (Paperback)
"Uncle Wizmo's New Used Car" was one of my kids' favorite car books. The picture are as fantastic as the story is whimsical. Uncle Wizmo buys a new used car, the irony of which is not lost on kids, after considering several cars that stretch the imagination. This book was the springboard for silly, creative, and inventive ideas my kids and I still laugh about.
