More About the Author

You can read about my latest book, "Lulu," at www.lulu-book.com.

I grew up all over the world, living in Cairo, Honolulu, Austin, Phoenix, Albuquerque, New York, Los Angeles, and Ft. Collins, Colorado, while we also traveled through Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. My writing life has become, by both necessity and design, a writing, producing, and directing career, including the formation of Babyhead Productions with my husband Ronald Shore.

I dove into show business immediately upon graduating high school a year early in Texas, moving to New York at the age of 17. After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts I began to work as an actor and singer, most notably playing the role of "Magaldi" in various productions of "Evita." In the early 90s I started writing, and my first play, "The Liquidation of Granny Peterman," was produced in Hollywood and got a rave in the L.A. Times.

While writing and rewriting the script that would become my first film, "Silent Lies," I worked on my first book, a photo-anthology called "Uncommon Heroes" that won a Stonewall Book Award from the American Library Association, tying with writer Dorothy Allison.

"Silent Lies," a dark, violent film about incest, caused a stir, and was banned in England until cuts were made. Though press materials for the film said otherwise, I was referred to in newspaper articles as an "incest survivor," which I actually found rather funny. My Paramount/Showtime film "Bobbie's Girl" starred Bernadette Peters, Rachel Ward, and Jonathan Silverman. Bernadette received an Emmy nomination while the film received a G.L.A.A.D. nomination and a citation from The Advocate as one of the top ten television events of the year. My book "Mr. Confidential" was named a ForeWord Magazine Book of the Year finalist and won an Hermes Creative Platinum Award for Outstanding Non-Fiction. And I'm working with composer David Snyder to turn it into a stage musical.

I've also worked on such televisions shows as "Judging Amy" and "Witch," and have written lyrics for songs used in films, television shows, and stage musicals.

I live in West Hollywood with my husband Ron and our incorrigible dachshunds.

5.0 out of 5 stars 130 profiles including full page portraits of extraordinary lesbian and gay people., October 11, 2006
This review is from: Uncommon Heroes (Paperback)
This collection illuminates the accomplishments of gays and lesbians and the gay and lesbian community.

Profiled are actors, athletes, writers, journalists, filmmakers, photographers, ex-priests, psychotherapists, corporate attorneys, activists, poets, philosophers, artists, entertainers and members of the US Congress.

Many of the names in this volume were not well known to me which made it doubly appealing. The inclusion of others more famous, such as the artist/author/poet Tee A. Corinne, affirmed the validity of the book's content.

Preface by Jeanne Manford, the founder of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and introduction by editor Phillip Sherman.

Book Description - This photo-essay celebration of extraordinary Gay and Lesbian Americans isn't just about celebs like Martina and Ellen. It also follows the lives of ordinary GLBT people who do extraordinary things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important, March 22, 2010
This review is from: UNCOMMON HEROES (Paperback)
It isn't just about famous people. Sure, Elton and Martina and Ellen made a difference. But there are SO many others, people who aren't famous, who have made such a difference.
