This review is from: Uncommon Valor (DVD)
Several movies came out in the 1980s about American MIAs from the Vietnam war left behind in Southeast Asia. This is the best one in my opinion. The story is about Marine Col. Jason Rhodes (portrayed by Gene Hackman), a military officer and father who is driven to find his son who is classified as MIA. Believing his son to still be alive, he recruits several men who served with his son in Vietnam to leave their present jobs and go on the rescue mission. The characterizations of these men are excellent. This team faces many obstacles, including indifference by US politicians and opposition by military bureaucracy. Although this was a low budget film for its time, it had a good following. This is one of Patrick Swayze's early movies before he became famous, and the other actors are excellent in their roles. There is a lot of cursing in the dialog, and scenes can be very violent. This was done to make the film as realistic as possible. The story keeps the viewer's interest throughout, and has a symbolic ending.
