From the Back Cover
Uncompahgre: A Historic Guide to the Uncompahgre Plateau (Ute word meaning "Where Water Makes Red Rock," pronounced Un-Com-PAH-gray).
Amazing but true is the fact that one of the largest mountains in the American West is also one of the least known. Instead of a rugged sharp profile, like the rest of the mountains of southwestern Colorado, the Uncompahgre Plateau keeps a pencil-line profile on the horizon. The mountain covers an area of almost 2,000 square miles running from Ridgway, Colorado on the south to near Grand Junction, Colorado on the north.
Because of its relative obscurity, the Uncompahgre Plateau offers the explorer an opportunity to examine one of the most fascinating, intriguing and untouched areas of western Colorado. In fact, it is an area of slashing canyons, weird geology and typography, vast horizons and interesting history. Muriel Marshall captivates the reader as she describes stories of cowboy hardships, pioneer ventures, outlaw escapades and Indian Humor.
In your favorite mode of travel, whether by foot, auto or armchair, this engaging book will direct you along the easy, rim-top road of the Uncompahgre. The author takes numerous side trips and gives you the history of such appealing places as Sowbelly Ridge, Nasty Park and Tongue of Salvation.
Swift moving and casual in style, this latest reprint from Western Reflections, which now includes a detailed map and index, once again makes Muriel Marshall's book available for all serious collectors of Colorado history and geology.
