Book Description

June 1, 1998 0945448872 978-0945448877 1

Many people with diabetes are concerned that they will develop complications, yet don't fully understand what complications are, what to expect, or what treatments are available at what price. The Uncomplicated Guide to Diabetes Complications answers these questions in easy-to-understand language anyone with diabetes can understand. Thorough, comprehensive chapters cover everything the person with diabetes should know about prevention, treatment, and self-care of diabetes complications such as kidney and heart disease, hypertension and stroke, neuropathy and vascular disease, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Insulin and antibiotics have significantly prolonged the lives of people with diabetes, but longer life spans also allow many diabetics to develop complications of the disease. It is those complications that are addressed here. A question-and-answer format combined with case histories takes the reader through complications of the heart, nerves, feet, eyes, skin, and kidneys. Additional sections discuss psychosocial complications, sexual health, and obesity and physical inactivity. Medical terms and procedures are clearly defined and explained throughout the text. This is an excellent reference focusing on education and self-care, which complements The Johns Hopkins's Guide to Diabetes (LJ 7/97) and the American Diabetes Association Complete Guide to Diabetes (LJ 8/96). Essential for all consumer health collections.?Kate Kelly, Treadwell Lib., Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston

From Booklist

Although insulin and antibiotics have helped many with the various types of diabetes, as the human life span has increased, so has incidence of the disease and its complications. The American Diabetes Association has had a range of specialists contribute to this book of practical information for diabetics and their families. These clinicians and investigators, and the editors who put their contributions into a continuous text, have done a good job. The prose is understandable, the usable tables convey pertinent data, and the illustrations, which can be a major element in such a book, make their points clearly. Summaries at the end of many chapters reinforce the information and suggested actions, and humor occasionally brightens things, as in the funny-serious counsel, "When a person with diabetes complains that his shoes are killing him, he may very well be correct." Chapters on sexual and psychological problems demonstrate that the editors care about patients as persons. William Beatty

4.0 out of 5 stars Ending diabetes denial, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Uncomplicated Guide to Diabetes Complications (Paperback)
There are two reasons why every diabetic should own this book: (1) It is the best source I've found to combat what is manifest with every disease: denial! You cannot read this and continue to behave in ways that guarantee diabetes complications. (2) Its print is large enough for those of us whose eyesight has been compromised by diabetes.

READ THIS BOOK if you have diabetes!

By A Customer
This review is from: The Uncomplicated Guide to Diabetes Complications (Paperback)
This is a superb overview of diabetes complications written in easily understandable layman's language. It covers many types of complications and gives causes, symptoms and treatments for them. Even more important - a great deal of information on prevention is also given. This book is for those who suffer from this condition and those who care about them.
