I agree that the policy of unconditional surrender may have prolonged WW2. But I disagree it was a bad idea. Nazism was totally rooted out and West Germany and later a united Germany has become a civilized leader of a unified, peaceful Europe. If we had negotiated an earlier end to the war I question his benign idea of what would have become of the remaining Jews in concentration camps.
It is entirely possible a negotiated, earlier end to WW2. like WW1, would have only meant in 20 or 30 years a WW3 against a resurgent, militaristic Germany.
Seem like a quick throw away book without much analysis or thought put into it.

I've read and enjoyed other books by Thomas Fleming who's something of a contrarian historian and WWII is one of my areas of interest. So this one caught my eye from the start. My one concern was how could Fleming construct a full length book out of what seemed to be a very narrow theme. The fact is he hasn't. Unconditional Surrender is actually more of long magazine article, reading time about 30 minutes. It's well written, interesting enough although there's little depth and $2.99 isn't all that much money. On the other hand, for about the same amount you can get a whole magazine's worth of such articles.

If FDR had not demanded unconditional surrender, WWII may have ended in 1942, at least in Europe, saving millions of lives. Was FDR mentally ill?
