Book Description

Uncover Books
The Uncover series combines the best elements of a book with model elements to help readers truly "uncover" the mysteries of what makes things work. A fascinating three-dimensional presentation allows in-depth, hands-on exploration of the subject at hand. This unique "model" is easily built, deconstructed and re-built layer by layer, system by system just by turning a page, until an understanding of the topic is achieved. Uncover a T. Rex examines the structure and fossilized bones of the most powerful meat-eating animal to ever live on land. Learn about scientists' theories and observations and how they came to their conclusions, Discover where T. Rex fossils were found in the U.S., if they were hunters or scavengers, if they were related to birds, and how fast this enormous animal could run.

More About the Author

Dennis Schatz is author of 21 science books for children that have sold almost 2 million copies worldwide and have been translated into 23 languages.

His most popular books include Dinosaurs Sterebook, Uncover A T.rex, the Fossil Detective series of three books and the popular Totally series of six books (Totally Dinosaurs in 2000 to Totally Sea Creatures in 2003). He is also co-author/editor of several curriculum resources for teachers, including Astro-Adventures, Universe At Your Fingertips and More Universe At Your Fingertips.

His personal dream -- some would call it a fantasy -- is to have science be as pervasive as sports in our society. Imagine afterschool science, intramural science and that pick-up science activity down at the local park. He will know that the dream is a reality when everyone has to rush home for Monday Night Science.

He has received numerous honors, including the 1996 Distinguished Informal Science Educator Award from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). He recently received NSTA's 2005 lifetime achievement award (Distinguished Service to Science Education).

In 2009, he received the Faraday Science Communicator Award, presented annually by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). This award recognizes and honors an individual or organization that has inspired the public's interest in and appreciation of science. He joins an elite group of highly prestigious honorees: last year's winner was the PBS series NOVA, and in 2007 the award was presented to NPR Science Correspondent Ira Flatow.

In 2006 ASTC made him an ASTC Fellow for his lifetime achievement in service to the field and furthering the public's understanding of science. He is only one of 24 ASTC Fellows awarded in the history of ASTC and the first non-CEO or public official to receive the award.

A research solar astronomer prior to his career in science education, he worked at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, prior to moving to Seattle in 1977.

As Senior Vice President for Strategic Programs at Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington, he provides leadership to several of Pacific Science Center's major initiatives, including Washington State LASER and Portal to the Public. He co-directs Washington State LASER (Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform), a program to implement a quality K-12 science program in all 295 school districts in Washington State. The Portal to the Public effort is a new initiative to develop programs - both onsite and off -- that engage the public in understanding the current science research being conducted in our community. The first major Portal to the Public program is an NSF grant to develop and research effective models to engage the public in understanding current science research via face-to-face interactions with scientists.

I purchased this book for my 10 year old nephew, and he loves it! It is a fascinating overlay approach to displaying the anatomy of creatures that have fascinated children for generations. Frankly, all of the adults in our family love the book, too!

Great gift, and great teaching tool!

5.0 out of 5 stars In a fantastic series, this might be my fav., September 5, 2008

The whole "Uncovered" series is terrific, and this might be my favorite. Obviously, it calls for CONSIDERABLE speculation to provide a look at dino internal organs, the size and location of which can only be inferred from fossil clues such as skeletons, coprolites, and gastroliths (AKA, bones, dung, and gizzard stones), and from the arrangement of living relatives (crocodiles and chickens, say). But even granting that an element of imagination is involved, it feels amazing to be peering at the insides of this amazing predator that lived so long ago. Jurassic Park is great, Walking With Dinosaurs is wonderful, but nothing helps get at what makes something tick better than getting under its hood, so to speak. This book allows one to peel back the ribs and see the massive lungs, or lift up the skull and see the breathtakingly tiny brain. This is the sort of "true fantasy" material that can infect a kid with lifelong love of creative discovery, and awe for the natural world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the right child, January 15, 2011

I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old, who are VERY interested in what's inside their bodies. They understand basic concepts like bones, stomach, lungs, colon (it's where the "poo" comes out), heart (it's a muscle pushes the blood around), etc. As a result, they found this book fascinating. "Look! He has ribs too!" "Is this where his poo comes out?" "This is the inside of his skin."

I'll admit, we don't read the words...but the 3-D nature of the layers is VERY interesting to them. They have been trained to be gentle so as not to break the layers. We also don't leave the book lying around; it sits on "Mommy's bookshelf" until they ask for it, and it goes back once they lose interest. But they usually spend 10-15 minutes looking at it at a time, and I figure that's pretty good for their ages and the topic.

I've since bought the horse Uncover a Horse (Uncover Books) for my 3 year old daughter (sharing is a problem at this age)...it came with the layers broken (3-4 tabs that attach the anatomical parts to the pages were snapped, apparently in shipping). My husband glued it back together, no problem...but then, he's also my handyman (he owns over 5 kinds of glue, and clamps of every size)...I'm not sure how someone with a less well-stocked workroom would do repairing it.
