I purchased this book for my 10 year old nephew, and he loves it! It is a fascinating overlay approach to displaying the anatomy of creatures that have fascinated children for generations. Frankly, all of the adults in our family love the book, too!

Great gift, and great teaching tool!

5.0 out of 5 stars In a fantastic series, this might be my fav., September 5, 2008
By
The whole "Uncovered" series is terrific, and this might be my favorite. Obviously, it calls for CONSIDERABLE speculation to provide a look at dino internal organs, the size and location of which can only be inferred from fossil clues such as skeletons, coprolites, and gastroliths (AKA, bones, dung, and gizzard stones), and from the arrangement of living relatives (crocodiles and chickens, say). But even granting that an element of imagination is involved, it feels amazing to be peering at the insides of this amazing predator that lived so long ago. Jurassic Park is great, Walking With Dinosaurs is wonderful, but nothing helps get at what makes something tick better than getting under its hood, so to speak. This book allows one to peel back the ribs and see the massive lungs, or lift up the skull and see the breathtakingly tiny brain. This is the sort of "true fantasy" material that can infect a kid with lifelong love of creative discovery, and awe for the natural world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the right child, January 15, 2011
By
SKW (Cleveland, Ohio) - See all my reviews
I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old, who are VERY interested in what's inside their bodies. They understand basic concepts like bones, stomach, lungs, colon (it's where the "poo" comes out), heart (it's a muscle pushes the blood around), etc. As a result, they found this book fascinating. "Look! He has ribs too!" "Is this where his poo comes out?" "This is the inside of his skin."

I'll admit, we don't read the words...but the 3-D nature of the layers is VERY interesting to them. They have been trained to be gentle so as not to break the layers. We also don't leave the book lying around; it sits on "Mommy's bookshelf" until they ask for it, and it goes back once they lose interest. But they usually spend 10-15 minutes looking at it at a time, and I figure that's pretty good for their ages and the topic.

I've since bought the horse Uncover a Horse (Uncover Books) for my 3 year old daughter (sharing is a problem at this age)...it came with the layers broken (3-4 tabs that attach the anatomical parts to the pages were snapped, apparently in shipping). My husband glued it back together, no problem...but then, he's also my handyman (he owns over 5 kinds of glue, and clamps of every size)...I'm not sure how someone with a less well-stocked workroom would do repairing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a neat book - my 6 year old really enjoys it!, November 5, 2011
This review is from: Uncover a T. Rex: Take a Three-Dimensional Look Inside a T. Rex! (Uncover Books) (Hardcover)
I happened to run across this book at a wholesale club and picked it up. What a great find! The center of the book is a model of a T. Rex, but what isn't obvious is that as you turn each page, each layer of the dinosaur is suspended inside that page, so the model gets build up and your child can see each system individually and how it fits inside.

I bought this and several others in this series and my 6 year old, who is in 1st grade just loves them. My aunt was so impressed she asked me to send her the info on these books so she could buy it for her grandkids.

This is a whole series of books, if your child is interested in human anatomy, check out Uncover the Human Body: An Uncover It Book (Uncover Books). For more animal related books see Uncover a Frog (Uncover Books), Uncover a Shark: An Uncover It Book (Uncover Books), Uncover a Dog (Uncover Books), Uncover a Dolphin (Uncover Books), Uncover a Horse (Uncover Books), Uncover a Cobra (Uncover Books), Uncover a Tarantula: Take a Three-Dimensional Look Inside a Tarantula! (Uncover Books).

There is one drawback to this book (and series), the various small pieces of the model are held to the book with little pieces of plastic, so they are somewhat fragile. So far we haven't had anything break, so they aren't super fragile, but I wouldn't recommend this book for a child who is too young to know to be careful with it, since it certainly isn't designed to withstand rough wear and tear.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Well Written, Fun For exploring/discussion, March 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is a really well done idea - each turn of the page reveals different parts of a T-rEX - musculatory, skeleton, digestive, skin, etc. in 3D and in color. And yes, it is very speculative due to what we do know about dinosaurs. Plus, each page has fascinating facts about dinos and their biology. Just keep in mind for inquisitive hands that the pieces cannot be removed from the book - they are not made to be assembled separately but only for show within the pages.

I would rate this a 5 star but for two detractions: a) the books in this series ges dented and marked very easily on the outside corners (looks worn and well used after a few days) and b) the T-Rex parts in 3D are very cheap and thin plastic that almost feel like they'd break if you breathed on them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Uncovering T-Rex, November 21, 2006
Great book. I purchased two (2) of them, but had a BAD time with your site. It kept changing my order number from 2 to one. In the end you sent me four copies. I returned the extras and you did give me credit for the cost of the books but not return my $20.22 shipping cost. Please help. E. M. Michael?.
