We read this book in a graduate-level marriage and family therapy class, and I found it to be really helpful. The book has chapters on several different family structures, including processes that keep family structures in place. The beginning of the book discusses the difference between shame and guilt (evaluation of self versus evaluation of behavior), how shame is developed, and how it is maintained in the context of the family. The book also provides ways to help families.

I really liked that the book ties conceptualizations with really practical examples that you would see working with real families. I found this helpful in linking the ideas presented in the book to concrete examples, which seemed to help me absorb the material better. I highly recommend this book!
