Biography

Biography by Greg Prato

MC Lyte was one of the first female rappers to point out the sexism and misogyny that often runs rampant in hip-hop, often taking the subject head on lyrically in her songs and helping open the door for such future artists as Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Lyte began rhyming at the age of 12, which eventually led to a single, "I Cram to… Read more in Amazon's MC Lyte Store

1.0 out of 5 stars The confidence is gone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, February 16, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Da Undaground Heat 1 (Audio CD)
This is the sound of a MC that has been made to feel insecure and no longer relevant. Mc Lyte was never one that had to make an effort, she was naturally gifted. This album cover speaks for itself (Desperate)! Whatever happened to the smoothness the jazzy hypnotic furturistic swing beats she ones had ? Whatever happened to the calm manner in how she delivered her rhymes like Rakim? This album is just ridiculious and a shame in the Mc Lyte Achieves. If you want to hear the Mc at her best go with "Lyte as a Rock & Eyez on This." Also "Ain't no other" had some pretty tight tracks on it as well. This album is so fake ..its almost like she is doing this just so she can fit in. The screaming and ranting on and on through out this effort is ludicris! Then the tracks are generic as Hell! You are the greatest female rapper of all time..you changed the game for females, WAKE UP!! You do not have to stoop to this level. So what you got released from Atlantic it doesn't mean that Missy or any of the others are better than you. It just means that you need to do what suited you from the beginning " Confident ,Cool, Smooth, Calm and Collect .....Remember the LYTE.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lyte Swings & Misses, August 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Da Undaground Heat 1 (Audio CD)
Damn - She's my favorite rapper of all time & it hurts me to say that I really didn't like this CD. Besides 2 tracks (God Said Lyte & Ride Wit Me) the whole CD is straight garbage. Her beats get monotonous after awhile & she really doesn't need phone interludes from celebs to maintain her relevancy in the game. She should've come with tighter tracks (& maybe a couple of dope cameos from say, Missy or Yo-Yo) and her disk would've been stronger. Hopefully her next project will finally give her the respect and airplay she deserves.

4.0 out of 5 stars ...in full effect, MC Lyte is BACK!!!, July 21, 2003

This review is from: Da Undaground Heat 1 (Audio CD)
"...Lyte & Madd Funk, we're flaming on, took a vacation some of 'em came and gone..." Just an example of one of the lines that she's spitting letting you know that it's been a minute, but she's back with a new crew and a sick new look, word!

"God said Lyte, from the beginnin' of time, I'm givin' them rhymes, of feminine kind, keeping it tight!..." Without a doubt, the hottest tracks are "God said Lyte", "Fire", "Brooklyn" and "Ride with Me". She's still flippin' words and phrases the way she always has on albums like "Lyte as a Rock" and "Ain't No Other" but I think this album has a newer attitude than she's tried in other comebacks. And like "Ain't No Other" (1993) which included hits like Ruffneck and I go on, she has this whole new "thing" going on that let's you know she means business and she's definetely comfortable with her legendary mark on hip hop.

Like she says.."gotcha guessing, why won't this bit*h ever die, sure as you will hide, we'll never see eye to eye, I'm the Lytro and I might go psycho, if I'm on my cycle, act like ya' might know, which way the Lyte go, but cha' never will, 'cause I never spill, fu*k it I said it, I'm that ill....."
