1.0 out of 5 stars Undead and Overrated July 5, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I checked out the latest installment in the Undead series from my local library as soon as it became available and finished it in one sitting. At the outset, MJD thanked all her fans for sticking by her with the last book and I was happy to count myself in this group until I began to read this drivel. If an author seeks to take the reader on a journey--then the trip that we are being taken on with this book feels like the LSD kind. Betsy mostly rambles and drops the f-bomb while trying to figure out her altered timeline. Sorry paranormal romance fans because gone are the hot scenes between her and Sinclair. He comes across as the hot guy who just so happened to live in your dorm. Sink Lair and Tina more or less make cameos--the only characters that put in more than a minor appearance are Marc and Betsy. Even Satan comes across as half-baked in terms of character development. I felt that there was no plot to speak up and really regret even wasting the time it took to read the book. Reading this book made me forget what I liked about the series in the first place. Betsy comes across as more whiny than usual and so stupid that one wonders if she even remembers how to put on her Manolos. At the risk of spoiling the book for anyone who would deign to read it, we are not given any answers that we did not already figure out as of the last book and of course, the way is paved for another book to tie up the loose plot ends which are just as loose from start to finish. I can understand a bit of deus ex machina when it comes to trying to resolve a story, but come on, even the explanations that the characters give for their actions are out-of-character and wholly unbelievable.... 1.0 out of 5 stars Total drivel - no stars would be a compliment! July 6, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have forced myself to finish this book and my head is still spinning from the lunacy of it. Save your money.... If I could get a refund for this slapdash, poorly written insult of a book, I would! Insult? Yes... How dare the author treat loyal readers like idiots?

Ridiculous and incomprehensible plot lines... Yes
Feeble and unrealistic character development...yes
Short chapters, lots of padding...yes.

I am infuriated by this carelessly written, feeble excuse for a book. It does not deserve to be described as a novel. The author has clearly lost all interest in the series and assumes that loyal readers are gullible enough to continue paying for her work.

Do not buy this book, do not borrow it from a library and do not waste a minute of your precious lives reading this rubb
Ish.

1.0 out of 5 stars Undead and Uninspired July 5, 2011
By jess
Format:Hardcover
I am an avid reader of all of MaryJanice Davidson's works. I downloaded this onto my Kindle this morning and just finished it. I cannot stress how disappointing this book is. Betsy comes across as more brain dead then ever, Sinclair is utterly clueless, and Laura morphs into the Antichrist with no explanation. Save your money and get it from the library, instead of wasting your money on this.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's just terrible! July 6, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I sensed that the book was going to be unsatisfying when I read the Author's Note. She claimed this book was the second of a trilogy within a series. She said readers might be left with unanswered questions, but those questions would be answered in her next book which will be released in 12 months time. Well I was right about the unsatisfying, but not because of the unanswered questions. It isn't interesting enough to care about for 12 minutes let alone 12 months. There just wasn't any point to this book at all.

I don't think writing a trilogy excuses the lack of a plot for book 2. If that weren't enough, the characters were whiny, ridiculous, and stupid. The dialogue peaked at plodding but spent most of it's time at irritating. This book was just bad!

1.0 out of 5 stars WTH??? July 9, 2011
By Stormie
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book really IS as bad as most everyone is saying. I love this series, but this installment is a true WTH experience. The first thing I noticed was all of this missing words. I guess they have fired the editors and are just running books through spellcheck now? I actually wondered if you could return a used book due to missing words? Doesn't that qualify it as "broken?"

Then, there is the fact that the events of the story take place over 1 or 2 days. No need for a timeline here. Just call it "Tuesday."

And our favorite smart-a$$, wise-cracking herione is now apparently on some kind of meds, possibly crack, because her thoughts, words and actions are all over the place. She is MANIC. I often caught myself wanting to skim paragraphs because the words were just a jumbled mess. Betsy spends a good part of the book with a headache, and I definately had one when I finished it.

The end has some very sad moments, but that was the only part of the book that had any meaning at all. And weirdly enough, I found myself wondering if Betsy is the villain and the Anti-Christ is the heroine. How is that for confusion?

Let's hope that this is the author hitting "rock bottom" and she will only get better from here.

2.0 out of 5 stars New Betsy July 6, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I remember in my last Queen Betsy review I warned everyone that if they didn't like cliff hangers to wait until Undead and Undermined came out that way you would be good to go. Well I would like to apologize. I really like this series. I mean Betsy is one of the few characters that has me rolling back and forth in my chair laughing. I adore Sinclair and really, really like Mark. I was nervous during the first `arc' but knew that Betsy couldn't go on being naive and ditzy forever. I was ready for a more mature Betsy, one who would rule with Sinclair by her side. I enjoyed it when she did start ruling better, and making more decisions with her brains not her toes (haha referencing her shoe fetish) But I'm a little worried at how she's not being portrayed.

Betsy matured, only to go backwards. I felt like in this book a lot of things happened that the readers didn't understand, at the same time Betsy seemed to be in the dark as well. Her baby steps forward have now been in vain seeing as how she's fallen backwards past her original starting point. I was also sad that Sinclair played such a little role in this book. The time traveling also gets a little confusing as readers start to wonder if it's even worth trying to keep up with the who, where, when. I'm not sure how MJD will be able to pull Betsy out of this while still making sense to the readers. The gist of the book is that Betsy is trying to stop Evil Betsy from an alternate time line. There is Hell, ghosts, no steamy scenes, and something that happens to Laura that really irritates me. She's still a good writer; I think she's just trying to take Betsy in an opposite direction then when she started.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great series, starting to get stale
This series started out great but I'm getting real tired of Betsy's whining and zoning out when it comes time for her to woman-up and take care of a situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keep Going Betsy
Queen Betsy is everything that I find annoying about women. Or envy. However, I adore her. She's fun and easy to read. When I've had a hard day, she is relaxing.

Very good story. The Queen Betsy series has always been a good one. Not the best in the series, but definitely worth the read.

Oh, I can't even imagine... but it should be interesting.

I wonder if the "Undetermined" of the title has to do with the changeability of the timeline.

So what causes the decline in writing?
I think it has to do with trying to write more than one series at once and pressure from the publishers, who are indeed greedy. The only author I have seen who has been able to write multiple series at once without the qualities of their books declining is Nora Roberts and now even she is... Read more
