Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The 12th in Davidson's Undead series (after Undead and Unstable) lives down to its wishy-washy title, crossing snarky pop-culture references with solemn religion. Betsy, queen of the vampires, has killed Satan, the mother of Betsy's half-sister, Laura (yes, that makes Laura the Antichrist). Now Betsy wants to mend fences with a belated Thanksgiving. With his newfound tolerance for sunlight, Betsy's handsome and dangerous husband, Eric, is giddy with happiness. Less joy-inspiring is Betsy's best friend's pregnancy; in fact, Betsy feels nothing about it at all, which only registers as strange after Laura kidnaps Betsy and abandons her in Hell. Davidson's writing remains zippy and fun, but it almost entirely lacks substance, and the religiosity that seeps in toward the ending (  ÇÿCome along,' I told the Antichrist. ÇÿCome pray with me'  ) is as jarring as reading that the commanding, soulful, and hunky king of the vampires baby-talks to puppies. Even diehard fans will struggle to love this episode. Agent: Ethan Ellenberg, Ethan Ellenberg Agency. (Aug.)

From Booklist

The twelfth episode in the saga of Betsy Taylor, queen of the vampires, sister of the spawn of Satan, and slayer of the devil is packed full of an insane number of pop culture references, from Mary Sue to the Wizard of Oz and The Wrath of Khan. The horny, potty-mouthed, shoe-aholic is in a parallel time line, in which there are no Christian Louboutin shoes, though there are plenty when she’s in Hell. Meanwhile, back at the mansion, no one is sure whether Jessica is newly pregnant or ready to deliver, but at least there is a zombie doctor on hand if needed. Some chapters are told from Betsy’s husband, Sinclair’s, point of view, making for some confusion, but Davidson provides clues to help guide the reader. --Diana Tixier Herald

I hope the next book is better...if not it will be the last one I read in this series.

Alas, by the end of the book, I felt it still left me unsatisfied and kindof guilty for having wasted my precious time on this series.
Megan Elizabeth
The last handful of books, though, seem to be 90 percent immature dialogue and 10 percent plot.

To be fair, this series was always weak on plot. The last handful of books, though, seem to be 90 percent immature dialogue and 10 percent plot.
In the early books, Betsy was sarcastic and immature - but still tolerable. With each subsequent book she gets more and more immature. It's no longer endearing.
What passes for plot in this book doesn't even get hinted at until 30 percent of the book is gone. Think about that. The first 30 percent of the book revolves around absolutely nothing - and can be tossed out and not change the story in the slightest.
Besides Betsy actually getting dumber (and less charming) with each subsequent book, Sinclair completely loses his cool factor this go-around. He used to be cool and now he is a flaming idiot with no sex appeal.
Zombie Marc is a hassle, Jessica's pregnancy is a bore and baby Jon is an afterthought.
In essence, this series has lost it's creativity and lovability and is complete drivel now. It should have ended six or seven books ago - and yet I'm the idiot that keeps buying them. I'm mostly mad at myself, really. Davidson wouldn't keep fleecing readers if we didn't let her.
The truth is, I don't want to let a series go before it is finished - but I have got to learn to let a series go that should be finished (even though it drags on and on and on and on and on). This series needs to be put out of its misery.

I LOVED this series, but am so DONE. This book was the worst. I could hardly force myself to get through it, the writing was so bad. I kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting for some sort of plot but it never came. I don't know what in the world happened to this author to suddenly butcher and ruin this series, but I refuse to give her anymore of my money for NOTHING in return. I wish I could get my money back.

Completely different from the others. Betsy has become a scatter brain. Nothing wildly sexy about Sinclair.
It seems all the characters have lost their edge and the book contained no apparent plot.

Have loved these books from the very start of the series, but this one is a disappointment. I'm halfway through and I'm still waiting for it to 'catch' me as the other books have done from the first page. I've been reading it for three days and I've never taken this long to finish one of her books, usually I'm done in one day, maybe two. Especially when I am on summer vacation, like now.
Yes, Betsy is a vapid ding-a-ling, but usually a likable ding-a-ling. Not so in this book. Sinclair is so out of character I barely recognize him. Everything so far is just so scattered and random, my only hope is that it improves before I finish it. I'll try to update this review after I'm done - if there is any improvement.

Please see review by A. Lee...sums it up exactly. Save your money...$15.00 for 3 pages of plot. Let's either get it together here or put this series to bed, I feel ripped off!

This was the worst Betsy book ever. I have to sit back and wonder if the author even has a clue as to where she is going with this series. Perhaps, she should stake Betsy and Sinclair and put them out of their misery. UGH! This has happened so many times in series books. The reader gets into them loves the characters and then bam! The series goes to hell in a hand basket. Case in point L.K. Hamilton Anita Blake series. I didn't even bother to buy the last book. Authors actually need to do some work and not let the popularity of a series carry them. I skimmed through most of Undead and Unsure and can't even really tell you what a majority of the book was about. I wouldn't have bothered to skim past the first paragraph if I hadn't spent hard earned money on the book and felt I should get something for it. I gave Betsy 2 stars. One for actually having the guts to call this crap a book and pulling off getting it published. And another star for the last paragraph, which was the only thing of merit in the entire book. I honestly don't think I'll buy the next installment in the series when it hits the shelves. I can do better with my money and time.

I am 33 percent into the book and quitting. This story, if there is one later, is so boring. I can't believe I paid so much money for this drivel. I guess another series is off the reading list. I wish some of these authors would recognize when to wrap it up.

I have always loved this series but after reading the last two books I am wondering....What Happened? This book was a complete waste of my time. I spent the past couple of days reading this book while hoping, somehow, there would be a p-l-o-t.....Boy! Was I disappointed! This book was just so stupid that I feel robbed! I cannot believe that I wasted good money for this and now I am angry with myself for.. a) buying it (and not checking it out of the library) and.. b) for spending time to actually read it.....Will not buy any more of this author's work. If she was bored with the series then why not announce the story is done and be done with it. I could have accepted that better than this ridiculous book.... No Longer A Fan!!!
