After he cracks an enemy code that helps end the war and saves millions of lives, he gets driven to suicide by a vengeful intelligence officer named Rip Greamer. To save his family from an even darker fate, Pete must follow his dog beyond the grave and into a purgatorial maze of tunnels beneath Los Angeles to solve one final puzzle.

Under Angels is a ghost story that includes Los Angeles history, UFOs, anagrams, the K-9 Command Unit, WWII cryptography, love, tragedy, second chances, and Greamer, who is either a covert government agent or something far worse.

I'm struggling at work today...why? Because I stayed up WAY too late last night so I could finish this book. I kept telling myself one more chapter and then I will go to bed, one more chapter and then I will go to bed. Sixteen chapters and ten minutes of post-book crying later I was finally able to go to bed. This book was phenomenal. The best way for me to describe it is mind-bending. What's real, what's not, what's around the next corner or in the next hole, it kept me on the edge of my seat. It had a certain fast-paced urgency I couldn't get enough of. The character of Rip Greamer is frighteningly realistic and made my pulse race anytime he appeared. I love the fact that it was written from the point of view of Shadow the dog, it added a certain simple sweetness to the whole story. What owner doesn't want to believe that our beloved pets would go to the ends of (or in this case the center of) the earth for us? I would recommend this book to ANYONE who has even the slight bit of interest in the supernatural. I'm very much looking forward to the graphic novel. I hope Jace will continue with his writing as I would very much love to see what he could come up with next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch original story! September 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have never wrote a review but felt compelled to include my thoughts on this novel. To say I'm an avid reader is an extreme understatement. I consume books like my french bulldog consumes plastic toys. Any day can find me chest deep in mystery, horror, fantasy, or thriller stories from a large variety of authors. There is never a time when I don't have three or more books going at once. I believe it's a result of my need to find that one book that will drag from my depths the true emotions that life has forced me to conceal in places most people fear to tread.

I found that book in Under Angels, by Jace Daniel Albao. His writing style is dark, dangerous and compelling. The story took me by the throat from the first line and shook me right through the ending. The characters were emotionally electric and once I began the novel there was no other life but theirs. I read the book in one day, forsaking all others, until the early evening found me at the finish line with tears and a powerful desire to read everything this man has ever written, whether novel or notes on a pub napkin.

I do not recommend this novel to those who read "Urban Fantasy" such as Twighlight or the plethera of vamps, werewolves, etc. stories that take horror and make it into a cotton candy dreamscape. This is for the true fan of genre who aches to return to the days of Robert Bloch and Richard Matheson.

Astounding - Asphyxiating - Tremendous - Terrifying - Superb - Unparalleled

4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping, fun read August 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
A fun, fast paced adventure that takes the reader around, under and through some of L.A.'s most interesting locations and urban myths of yesterday and today. The story has some amazing twists, is full of cool action and dark turns, yet also packs strong emotion and feelings (I challenge you not to shed a tear at the end). This is a great read for anybody who likes history, intrigue, mystery and powerful story telling and is very tough to put down once you get started.

4.0 out of 5 stars Under Angels is great July 20, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is not part of my usual syllabus. Not into supernatural fiction. If I can't make historical or scientific sense of it, I can't believe it, which explains my atheism. But this was given to me by a friend, who insisted I take it as part of my summer reading, somewhere sandwiched between a reread of Caro's "The Power Broker," and Henry James, "The American." A book I've been telling people I read, but really haven't.

Henry James is going to have to wait for next summer, because I had more fun reading this book than a pile of puppies in a flower bed. He takes history, world war two, dogs, which I like, then he weaves in this whole thing about his suicide and a decent into hell, so to speak, which when you think about it, is really literate. I think this boy read what his teachers told him in high school and college, because even the spiritual supernatural, ghost, out of body story aspects are founded in myths, Scandanavian or otherwise, and yeah, there's that whole Joseph Campbell zeitgeist motif, but without hitting you ever the head like George Lucas does with it.

In the end, it's a great story, it's a fantasy, and it doesn't insult the mindsest of intellectual phonies like me. I might go to the movie, as well, if someone makes it. But only after I've seen all those movies where people in British accents dressed in old timey clothes talk to eachother in the dining room where men in white gloves serve them dinner. I like those movies a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dog's Tale of Hope, Love, and Second Chances March 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
You know how dog people like to talk to their dogs as if they understand everything? Well, they do. Not only is their sense of smell 200 times greater than ours but their hearts are bigger too. Jace Daniel Albao understands this better than most, but that is only the beginning of his talents and insight. Under Angels is a fluid novel that keeps you intrigued from the start. I couldn't put it down or deny myself the company of the characters until there were no more pages left. After finishing the book I kept seeing his characters in the shadows of my mind, in the landscape of my waking life and in every quiet moment. They stuck with me, became part of me until they finally went the way he wrote them...and once you read the book you will know just what I mean. Twists, turns, games, surprises, hope, dreams, love, passion, second chances. What more could you ask for? I don't want to spoil anything, but watch out for the tears. This book has heart. So much so that it just might break yours a little. Once you recover, you'll be glad for the journey. Read it now.
