Book Description

January 1, 2004
When the Luftwaffe unleashes its full fury on the city in the first of three major blitzes, the Taylor family are bombed out. Judy finds her job relocated to a hotel in Southsea, and home is now a small terraced house in April Grove. And then there is the news she has been dreading—her sailor fiance has been killed. Judy and her young, recently widowed aunt Polly decide to turn their grief to good account, and join the WVS, running canteens, accompanying evacuee children, and helping the families of servicemen, often in the face of danger from air raids, flying bombs, and V2 rockets. Gradually, Judy and Polly find their own healing as they take part not only in their war work but in the life of April Grove, and although both are at first convinced they will never know love again, they both find it in the least likely manner.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'This story is set in Portsmouth around the years of World War II and centres on the way one family coped and survived... it tells their story of rationing and coping with shortages of most commodities. But there's a thread of hope throughout, lifting the story.' BEST 'Under the Apple Tree is full of warm, authentic characters living through extraordinary times.' MY WEEKLY 'In typical Lilian Harry style, UNDER THE APPLE TREE is full of warm, authentic characters, perfectly capturing the true spirit of courage and sacrifice in wartime... This is another delightful novel from a popular and talented author.' -- BOLTON EVENING NEWS 'This is the 10th in a series of sagas strong in period and local detail... heart-warming.' EAST ANGLIAN DAILY TIMES 'This novel captures the true spirit of courage and sacrifice in wartime, and it brings home the reality of how everyone rallied round.' EVENING PRESS 'Harry is another well-loved author whose traditional family sagas set in Portsmouth see impressive sales... It will, no doubt fly off the shelves.' BOOKSELLER --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

More About the Author

Hi,I am Lilian Harry and am delighted to welcome you to my Author Central page. I've been writing for a long time now, under the name Donna Baker as well as Lilian Harry, and most of my books are classed as 'historical novels', including those set during the Second World War (which is slightly hurtful, since I remember it....) I grew up near Portsmouth in Hampshire, have lived in Devon, Herefordshire and the Lake District (my favourite place!) and am now back in Devon on the edge of Dartmoor, where I am out every day walking my miniature schnauzer. Apart from writing, I ring bells, take part in amateur dramatics, go to concerts, theatre etc, read and play bridge - but only with very tolerant, forgiving people who like me a lot. (Or on the computer!) I would like to be cloned so that I can do all these things simultaneously.

This review is from: Under the Apple Tree (Hardcover)
"Under the Apple Tree" by Lilian Harry is a really great book. The book starts out in 1941 Portmounts with the Taylor family being bombed out of there home. Family moves to April Grove, where they become invovled with the war effort. This is a great book, as with other by Ms. Harry the reader feels that they are in the action and the reader is able to feel the emotions of the characters. This book does use characters from other books by Ms. Harry, but does not required the reader to know these character whole story. "Under the Apple Tree" is a great book
