Great power pop,

Power pop has to be really good to gain my attention, and then approval. These guys are really good. Their first album reminded me of Hollies and Beatles-style pop, but here they're even better with a pop style more reminiscent of Squeeze. Excellent songwriting, and a warm delivery that's just powerful enough to keep it non-wussy. These guys would be a guilty pleasure if I felt at all guilty about it.

I recently bought Well Wishers' first album Twenty-Four Seven and totally loved its Posie-ness (while not sounding derivative, although Shelton has a voice very similar to Jon Auer's) so had full faith to download Under the Arrows. Upon first listen last night I was utterly blown away by its excellence. A few real rockers, a few tender beauties (please hear 'Before the Race Was Run' in full) and other power-pop greatness in between. The other 2 reviewers (so far) both mentioned Squeeze, but I don't hear that at all, and I was a big Squeeze fan. (If anything, the sound overall is more Big Star than Squeeze.) Nor would I confuse Under the Arrows with the Posies as I did '24-7' upon first hearing. Shelton came totally into his own here, and he's brilliant. Love all the chimey guitars and lush harmonies! Shelton is a master of intricate song-craft and elaborate chord progressions, and has the perfect voice to deliver the goods. It made me deliriously happy to listen to the album, 3 times last night, and I never give a repeat listen to any album within even a few days. As reviewers always mention, for fans of the Posies, Matthew Sweet, XTC, Big Star, and REM in their prime. If you buy Under the Arrows and love it (which you will), trust me, you'll want to get Twenty-Four Seven. Now I have only two more Well Wishers albums to buy... then I just have to wait around for a new one to come out.
