I am not a fan of live recordings. In fact even some of my favorite singers have done some terrible concert discs. The reasons vary -- sloppy musicianship, crowd noise mixed too high, and other audio problems to name a few. So, with some trepidation I purchased this live CD by Annie Haslam. What a lovely surprise it turned out to be.
The sound is quite good and the performances are excellent. Some of the old favorites are here like 'Turn of the Cards', 'Northern Lights', and 'Carpet of the Sun' from the Renaissance days. She even includes 'Nature Boy / If I Loved You' from the Roy Wood-produced 'Annie in Wonderland' disc. I think I actually prefer the concert rendition here. It has a cleaner, sparer musical backing that serves to accentuate Haslam's tremendous voice. Dave Biglin does a fantastic job of backing Annie on synthesizers, piano, and other instruments.
Of the new songs 'Brazilian Skies' (written for these shows) is a pleasant surprise. It is a lovely melody and Annie's voice positively caresses each word.
I cannot recommend this recording enough. I have already created a new fan for Annie just by playing this CD once for a friend. He now wants to hear her other recordings. Treat yourself to a lovely listening experience and purchase this disc. Thank you, Annie.

I've seen Annie Haslam perform solo numerous times and this collection is head & shoulders above any of the live gigs I've seen. I haven't been too thrilled with her more recent solo material performed live, but she must have been tremendously inspired by the Brazilian atmosphere because everything she does works on this album. There isn't a single weak track.
Annie performs with a single backing musician, Dave Biglin, who does a superb job of jumping back and forth between acoustic guitar, piano, and synthesizers, with MIDI-triggered drums thrown in as well. Beautifully done and a very intimate feel to the performance.
If you're a Renaissance fan who has been disappointed with Annie's solo albums, I doubt you'll be disappointed with this CD. In fact, I think it would be a fine introduction to Renaissance and progressive rock in general for people with very mellow tastes.

This enormously talented woman is my all-time favorite femalevocalist and this cd of a live performance is truly outstanding. Fromthe title cut, "Brazilian Skies" to Renaissance favorites you can't go wrong with this purchase. There is an import version that adds "Ocean Gypsy".

Hearing this music is like drifting off to a peaceful place. Here Annie gets a chance to shine on her own without the complex melodies and orchestral backing Renaissance gave her. She's accompanied only by David Biglin (mostly on piano with the odd guitar and drum program) who arguably does the best job that one person could. In most cases the bare-bones approach gives a warm, intimate feeling to the songs, especially the highlights "Northern Lights," "Let it Grow" and "Seashell Eyes." Only a couple ("Nature Boy," "Turn of the Century") sound flat without a band filling in. But this is a small complaint. In this setting the true beauty of Annie's voice carries the music by itself. For anyone Renaissance fan who's been curious about what Annie might sound like by herself, click and order this one - it's a wonderful overview of her solo albums and her voice sounds as heavenly as ever. For anyone not familiar with her music (shame..) it's a wonderful album to start with. What are you waiting for?

Annie's first solo live album is, to this reviewer, more interesting than the recycled live material of Renaissance currently being released (BBC Sessions, King Biscuit Flower Hour, etc.). On this outing, Annie performs some of Renaissance's lesser known gems, like "I Think of You" and "Spare Some Love." But what really makes this a must-have is the way it serves as a fine introduction to Annie's solo material. Songs like "Summon the Angels" (from her newest album, The Dawn of Ananda), "After the Oceans Are Gone," and "Moonlight Shadow" hold their own beautifully alongside Annie's more famous older material. I bought this album as a Renaissance fan, and it turned me into a fan of Annie's solo work as well. If you are not familiar with either Renaissance or Annie Haslam, I think this would be a fine place to begin. It's a great career overview of a truly wonderful (and underappreciated) vocalist. After this, go for her Dawn of Ananda CD, and pick up Renaissance's Ashes Are Burning, Prologue, and A Song for All Seasons. Enjoy!

Perfect - how does she stay perfect? I first heard Annie on the "Turn of the Cards" album some 25 years ago. Her voice endeared me. I haven't heard her in a while but this new live album tells me she is still perfect. I am amazed that she sounds as good (if not better) than ever. This album is half Renaissance, half solo. Well, well worth the purchase. One of the finds of the year.

I have been a huge fan of this Diva since her Renaissance days. Sadly, I lost track of Annie over the years but continued to fill my collection with Renaissance gems that have appeared on CD. (King Biscuit Live at Albert Hall, etc.) Brazilian Skies is a beautiful live effort by an angel of a singer who sounds just as good as ever if not better. The choice of material is excellent and allows the listener to be introduced to new songs while remembering those beautiful ballads from the past. But more than anything it is her Voice that sends emotion done from your soul throughout your body. I can not give this CD any higher marks. She is a gift from God to those that her sing.

I have listened to Annie and Renaissance for many years. I try to hear her perform live whenever I can. She has a truly 'amazing' voice and personality. I heard 'Moonlight Shadow' from the 'Live Under Brazilian Skies' CD over the radio at an outside cafeteria at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar, where the official languages are French and Malagasy. Anyway, being halfway around the globe in a Third World country, with few Western comforts, I was thrilled to hear Annie's voice. I was so ecstatic I had to tell the locals running the cafe that I knew the woman singing the song (in my Franglish). I don't know of they were impressed, or if they just couldn't understand me. 'Live Under Brazilian Skies' reveals all of Annie's ... and her band's ... talents. I can't wait for her (their) next release. I would encourage anyone who enjoys an absolutely beautiful voice to get a copy of not only this CD, but anything done by Annie. Enjoy her gift from God.

A beautiful CD with some brilliant vocal performances by the ex-Renaissance lead vocalist. I particularly liked versions of "Prince and the Princess", Yes's "Turn of the Century", and the song written for her trip to Brazil titled "Brazilian Sky". Though famous in her own right, I find it amazing to not find Annie in more main stream areas of music. Her voice is truly from above!

This CD contains some of my favorite covers of classic Renaissance songs, easily heard and the true voice of Annie Haslam comes across loud and clear! The people in Rio seemed to be so much in tune with this performance, it's a joy to listen to!! I even like the new songs, Annie at her finest!
