Nostalgia never fails..., October 10, 2007
This review is from: The Under Cover Book & Light: Ghosts and Other Scary Stories/Book and Light (Paperback)
I bought this book (Amazon Marketplace) for the same reason a lot of adults search for books they read a decade or so ago. Nostalgia.
My love for young adult books will never cease, even though I am *now* 20-something. My favorite books to read were scary/ghost story books. By the time I was 12, I had a whole book shelf dedicated mostly to scary stories for kids.
This book is the earliest book I remember reading. I remember the vibe I had while reading the book and a few stories stuck with me through the years. I originally bought the book when it was released as an "Under (the) Cover" book that came with a book light. If you were a Goosebumps fan, you may remember a few of those books came with a book light too.
Overall, this book is great for a young reader around 8 or 9. The short stories aren't complicated (as some short stories can be) and a few of them can be *just* creepy enough. I also enjoyed the illustrations in this book. They are line drawings (no color, hardly any shading) that is very unlike a lot of kids books that give a unique look at the stories you are reading. They're not as scary as Stephen Gammell's illustrations for another well-known scary stories book, but they hold up (for me anyway).
4 stars because it stayed in my mind over the years and persuaded me to re-purchase it again. Re-reading it was a blast. Old memories die hard for those of us that are kids-at-heart.
