3.0 out of 5 stars Formula
"Under cover of darkness" was disappointing after reading his other books. Although the tension begins to build at the beginning of the book, the plot melts into a tired formula--serial murderer, cult-driven, etc. etc. Seattle locales are well-described and provide an interesting setting, but they aren't enough to sustain interest and tension throughout...

Gus's wife, Beth, disappears.

FBI profiler, Andie Henning, is investigating a series of killings, the strange beginning of a serial killer. As Andie investigates the murders, she believes Beth may be a victim of the vicious killer.

Gus begins his own investigation, and as he uncovers certain "truth's" about his wife, he realizes he did not know her at all.

"Under Cover Of Darkness" will keep you turning the pages and guessing all the way to the end. The twists and turns come fast and furious, pulling the novel to it's shocking climax.

James Grippando has consistently written great book after great book. He has quickly become one of my favorite authors. With his new book he keeps the pace fast while juggling various characters, and shifting the plot twists into high gear. This is great entertainment.

A MUST read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could have been better, November 27, 2000

This book had a great, suspenseful story concept but seemed to end too abruptly without explaining the motive of the killer. I would have liked to have seen more development of the story in that area. Otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed the novel. I have read one previous book by this author, "The Informant", which was a very good story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping mystery, August 9, 2000

James Grippando's latest kept me guessing the whole way. A missing wife along with a serial killer on the loose can make for a predictable story, but not in the hands of Grippando. The story kept me entertained throughout, but I thought the second half was the better. Good mystery, good thrills, and good suspense, kept me glued too the book till the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Didn't want to put it down, November 15, 2006

I just finished reading "Under the Cover of Darkness". It was my introduction to a James Grippando novel. He has written a complicated yet easily understood novel about a busy attorney, Gus Whitley, who values his career over his family until his wife, Beth, disappears. He is left to take care of his six year old daughter and to make sense out of what could have happened to Beth. A serial killer is on the loose and we wait with baited breath to see if each murder will explain what happened to his wife. Grippando's prose style is crisp allowing the reader pick up the book and read as little or as much as time permits but always wanting to get back into the story. He uses interesting plot twists and turns to keep the pace moving. This book lends itself well to a reader with a busy schedule.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a book!, October 10, 2001

I started this book on Monday evening...reading the first 200 pages in one sitting (and finished it the following night)! What a great book. The characters were wonderfully written, giving you depth and insight into their personalities. The book begins with the disappearance of Gus Wheatley's wife. She never showed up to pick up their daughter. Gus is a powerful attorney who has spent more time on his career rather than his family. As he waits for word on his wife, he begins to realize how much he has missed about his wife and daughter. He begins to see the small changes that have taken place in his wife's behavior over the past several months. Has his wife left him? Has she been kidnapped? Or worse murdered? The FBI takes an interest in the case and Andie is assigned to the case. She is a young, ambitious agent who begins to unravel the case. Her character is strong and she begins to take chances in order to solve the case.

This book provides twists and turns, reads quickly and has a great ending!! I highly recommend the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear your calendar before you start this book!, September 3, 2001

This is the frist book I have read by this author. The first couple of chapters were good, but I have to admit this book did not grab me right at first. Don't get me wrong it was good I just wasn't absorbed in it. The Characters were interesting and that was what kept me reading. However, when you get to a certain spot YOU WILL NOT PUT IT DOWN until you devour the very last word! Thankfully I reached this spot on a Sunday and was able to finish the book in one sitting. I have read several great books that were spoiled by bad endings. The ending of this book will leave you giving Mr. Grippando a standing ovation! Great book and I would say a MUST READ!

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Grippando, September 21, 2004
This is definitely worth reading, tho, not as good as Last To Die & Hear No Evil. I must say that Grippando is consistent with interesting plot lines and wonderful characters that will keep you reading long into the night. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Of My Favorite Author's..., November 2, 2001
James Grippando is one of my favorite authors. His books never disappoint and this one is no different with its many surprising twists and turns. His fictional characters are some of the best, so believable and true to life and the story is so compelling I had trouble putting this book down. I expect no-less from this very gifted writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better, October 6, 2005
I am a huge fan of Grippando. He writes with the same ease as James Patterson. His characters are believable and his stories are riveting. This one will not disappoint you.

Gus Wheatly is a very busy attorney who has become so involved in his own life, he has shut out everyone who loves him and is out of touch with what is going on in their lives. One day, he gets a distressed phone call from his daughters school stating that his wife has failed to pick up their daughter and he needs to come get her. He is annoyed with this interruption in his life, but he is in for a much bigger interruption when he discovers his wife has disappeared without a trace.

Women who look like his wife start turning up dead, and their daughter receives a phone call from her mother. Is Beth alive or is this some kind of sick joke. No ransom notes arrive and Gus, along with the police, is left wondering if his wife is involved with the murders.

The book is fast paced and is never boring. I found it hard to put down. This is another winner in a long string of winners for Grippando. If you are a fan as I am, you will love this one. If you are new to his books, give this one a try. You will find yourself at the bookstore or library looking for his other novels.
