Under the Crown is a collection of 51 essays, one from each of the 2001 Miss America contestants. When the events of 9/11 took place, the pageant was faced with making the decision to cancel or continue. The young women determined to continue as an inspiration to a grieving nation. Each contestant shares how the events of 9/11 impacted them in live changing ways. The stories carry messages of hope and encouragement to our nation struggling to recover from death and destruction.

Katie Harman, Miss Oregon, was crowned Miss America in the aftermath of 9/11. She collected the stories from the other 50 contestants to comprise a book worthy to share with the nation as a way to provide hope and healing to the communities they serve.

This book offers 1 essay from each of the Miss America 2001 Contestants, including Miss America 2002, Katie Harman (who also contributes a Foreward). Each story gives insight into that woman's individual story of her year of service to her state, as well as her thoughts and feelings on being in Atlantic City during the tragedies of September 11, 2001.It would be a great book for Miss America or 9/11 collectors. It humanizes the Miss America contestants and gives an insight into their true individual personalities. It is also a very nice collection of the thoughts and feelings of women from around our country as well.

Under the Crown: 51 Stories Of Courage, Determination And The American Spirit is a informative and inspiring collection of fifty-one essays written by Katie Harman (Miss America 2002) and the 2002 Miss America Pageant contestants. A very inspirational collection to page through, Under The Crown is highly recommended as a unique, heartwarming, moving and evocative collection, with a heavy theme of mourning with regard to the September 11 attacks on America and hope for a brighter future.
