Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-K--In this slight story about cooperation, Grandma's quilt falls off the clothesline, and the barnyard animals try to discover who is beneath it. The pig warns that Grandma will be upset if they touch it, but he accompanies the animals and the mobile quilt as they make their way to ask their friends for help. Finally, prancing pony encourages them all to lift it, and they find two children underneath. This predictable story lacks charm and humor. The colorful illustrations are sweet but bland, and add little to this limp tale.

Review

When Grandma's big fluffy quilt blows off the clothesline one day, it lands atop a rather large "bump" and an equally sizable "lump." Farmyard residents remain stumped as they try to determine the bulges' identities. One by one, the puppy, the kitten, the chick, the goose, and the pony attempt to pull the soft, billowy quilt off the mystery protusions, but to not avail. With each attempt, the annoying piglet attempts to thwart the mission by reminding the others that the farmyard rules are clear: No one messes with Grandma' quilt. Once the other animals finally succeed in their quest to uncover the secret, the self-righteous piglet finds himself eating his words, and they're not tasty. Young readers will be taken with the simplicity of the story and the charming animal illustrations. Early readers may also find themselves reciting the words along with you. -- American Patchwork & Quilting, April 2001

Grandma's quilt falls off the clothesline on top of something living. When a little chick comes by, a voice from under the quilt asks for help to get the quilt off. The chick can't move the quilt so it asks the pig to help. The pig is worried that Grandma will get upset and won't help. The quilt, the chick and the pig all move to find more help. This continues through all the farm animals until finally the horse is large enough to pull off the quilt. I won't give away what or who is under the quilt or how the book ends as I don't want to spoil it for you. Children will love the book because they will want to know who or what is under the quilt. Virginia Esquinaldo's illustrations are perfect for Rachel Waterstone's story and the drawings of Grandma's quilt are realistic. After finishing the book, I can imagine a child getting under a quilt and pretending they are acting out the book.--Sandra L. Hatch, Bookshelf -- Quilt World, September 1999

5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful, picturesque and wholesome approach to teamwork., December 7, 1997

This review is from: Who's Under Grandma's Quilt? (Hardcover)
This book is geared toward the 4-8 year old set and accomplishes its task nicely through realistic, colorful pictures and concise text. While reading the book, I found the progression of the story lends itself beautifully to sequence. In addition, as soon as the students realize one animal is following the next, it's easy to ask them to make predictions as to what animal they think will appear next. As the story reaches its ending, you realize that there is a moral to this story as well---working together as a team can solve problems faster than working alone. The story and the match of the illustrations to the story make it an excellent picture book to use when teaching sequence, prediction, social skills or values. It would make a nice contribution to the literature in a unit about farm animals, grandchildren or cooperation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great find for a preschooler, September 16, 1997

This review is from: Who's Under Grandma's Quilt? (Hardcover)
Who's Under Grandma's Quilt? Is full of fun and subtleteaching. We don't know who is under there until the end, but a littlechild will wonder right away as a helpful chick wants to lift it and see, an anxious pig says " You better not" and other animals express a range of reactions for a child to ponder. "Whom are you talking to under grandmother's quilt?" says a goose. Rachel Waterstone has toughtfully written a wonderful book for children from two to five. It is original at the same time that it uses a traditional Chicken Little, or Braemer town Musicians line of animals to move the story forward. First Story Press has chosen illustrator Virginia Esquinaldo with the same good taste as they chose this first time author. Congratulations and thank you to all of them. This book is a great choice for young children.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Enjoyable Read, September 4, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Who's Under Grandma's Quilt? (Hardcover)
The "quilt with a bump and a lump that thumped" phrase is very catchy and something I'm sure kids of all ages will remember. The author has a unique writing style that flows naturally and suggests the personality of the characters nicely. I could almost hear the different voices saying the lines as I read it
