Book Description

Three short stories of paranormal romance: Jeaniene Frost's "Pack" brings you a tale of a lost hiker and her encounter with some very frightening--and sexy--wolves. A female werewolf helps a sheriff track down a killer "In Sheep's Clothing" by Meljean Brook. A woman must repay her family's debt to a shapeshifting magician in Ilona Andrews's "Grace of Small Magics."

These stories previously appeared in print in Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance.

About the authors:
Jeaniene Frost is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Night Huntress series and the Night Huntress World novels. To date, foreign rights for her novels have sold to nineteen different countries. Jeaniene lives in Florida with her husband Matthew, who long ago accepted that she rarely cooks and always sleeps in on the weekends. Aside from writing, Jeaniene enjoys reading, poetry, watching movies with her husband, exploring old cemeteries, spelunking and traveling - by car. Airplanes, children, and cook books frighten her.

Meljean Brook is the bestselling author of the Guardian series and the Iron Seas series. She was raised in the middle of the woods, and hid under her blankets at night with fairy tales, comic books, and romances. Meljean left the forest and went on a misguided tour through the world of accounting before focusing on her first loves, reading and writing-and she realized that monsters, superheroes, and happily-ever-afters are easily found between the covers, as well as under them, so she set out to make her own. Meljean lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and daughter.

Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)  Gordon and Ilona currently reside in Portland, Oregon with their two children, three dogs and one cat. They have co-authored two bestselling series, the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and romantic urban fantasy of The Edge.

All three of these stories were previously published in the Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance, and they were among the better stories in that collection, so here's your chance to read them if you missed them the first go-round. Andrews, Brook and Frost are three of my favorite authors and if you haven't run across them before these are nice little standalone stories not connected to their popular series. (These reviews are reincarnations from my previous review of the Mammoth Book of PNR )

***The Grace of Small Magics - Ilona Andrews - A powerful mage stakes his life on a woman with small magic but a large indomitable spirit. (4.0 stars - I really like the Andrews' writing style, and I enjoyed this one a lot - loved Grace who didn't meekly accept her fate. If you enjoyed this one, they have two great series: one UF, Kate Daniels, with magic in an alternate Atlanta, and a more fantasy romance one, The Edge, set in a magical world just outside of our own)

***Pack - Jeaniene Frost - A lost hiker's encounter with the supernatural may cost her life, either literally or figuratively - (4 stars - Another strong heroine, I would like to see more of Frost's shifter pack and had emailed Frost after this story first came out to see if she had more in the works - she'd like to write more but all her time is committed to her Night Huntress series and spinoffs.)

***In Sheep's Clothing - Meljean Brook - A werewolf goes home, and back to the man she left behind, and runs into a serial killer. ( 4.

4.0 out of 5 stars Three Great Short Stories October 26, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
These short stories were in The Mammoth Book of Paranormal Romance. I'd also read Grace of Small Magics before on the Ilona Andrews website. At the price its a little less than $1 per story, and I think its a fair price. I'll re-read these again.

Grace of Small Magics by Ilona Andrews - I really love this story; believable characters, very alpha male with feisty heroine who doesn't know just how powerful she really is. Great action and romance.

In Sheep's Clothing by Meljean Brook - This one didn't go the way I thought it would from the get go, and I really enjoyed the ride. The romance was so sweet and believable. Great story and it made me want to go out and read more from Meljean Brook.

Pack by Jeanine Frost - Probably the one with the least action, that dealt more with the character coming to grips with big changes in her life. This one was very good, too. I expected more action, but was very pleased with the realistic portrayal of the heroine's feelings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Under Her Skin February 1, 2012

"Pack" by Jeaniene Frost- 3.5 stars

In Pack, we meet Marlee who, while hiking alone, gets attacked by werewolves. She's rescued from her attackers by Daniel, who also happens to be a werewolf. Marlee is taken back to the town the pack lives in while they wait to see if Marlee is going to change at the full moon.

While she's stuck waiting, Daniel is guarding her to make sure she doesn't escape. There is attraction between the two, which Marlee attributes to Stockholm syndrome, but Daniel thinks is because of something else.

This short story was very different from what Ms. Frost normally writes. It was good, But seemed too short to develop the story properly. If Ms. Frost were to take it and make it into a full length novel, I think it would do very well.

"In Sheep's Clothing" by Meljean Brooks- 4 stars

Here we meet Emma, who left Pine Bluff six years ago after she was attacked and turned into a werewolf. She's returning now, having gained control over her wolf so that she can tell her former flame, Nathan, that she's a werewolf, and so she can settle back into the town.

Unfortunately, Emma is attacked by serial murderer who has been plaguing the town, and bites him. Now she and Sheriff Nathan need to find the murderer before he becomes even more dangerous as a new werewolf.

This story is great. Even though it is short, it allows for romance, suspense, and action. The characters were lacking a bit of development, but they were truly likable anyways. Great story overall.

"Grace of Small Magics" by Ilona Andrews- 5 stars

Everything that Ilona Andrews writes is amazing, and this story continues that trend. Meet Grace, who recently learned that her family is indebted to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three strong stories by three excellent authors April 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I can barely recall the last time I bought a multi author anthology and liked every story in it. This one was very good. I like stories like these where characters have to make choices and decide where they will fight or run or what is important. This had werewolves in two stories and magic and curses and battles in another. And of course romance. The Ilona Andrews story was a bit heavier than the usual tone but still good. Recommend to all paranormal fans on the fantasy edge.
