Different but Brilliant,

With "I am the Fun Blame Monster" Menomena definitely caught my attention. Fun Blame Monster is a truly fantastic record, and with it Menomena proved they are a great band. With the current recording, they proved something else: They are musical geniuses. This time around they flipped 180 degrees and recorded something entirely unlike the previous. Completely instrumental, with sweaping textures and trumpets, this shows that they are not interested in simply replicating their previous album (unlike so many bands these days, eg. Broken Social Scene), but are instead wanting to explore and experiment. This is a great record, remeniscent of Do Make Say Think. Recommended.

Although its plodding nature is definitely aligned for background-intensive reciprocation, this little-explored release has enough allure falling through its simplistic cracks to warrant the Menomena moniker.
