3.0 out of 5 stars great start and premise, weak finish
This book started out with great suspense, a plot filled with twists, and a seemingly unrelated Intuit Indian. Henrich then wove it into a good story, about the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war.
Some of the characters are stock from spy novels that have been there before example unstable Russians. There is some good character development on some of the...

4.0 out of 5 stars East meets West, August 22, 2004
This review is from: Under the Ice (Paperback)
The Soviet Premier's airplane suddenly veers off course, far above the frozen Canadian wilderness. A new state-of -the-art NORAD radar installation activates as it does. And a squadron of F-15 interceptors are in the air when the Premier's plane disappears.

Canada sends a squad of Canadian Arctic rangers to race to the region where the plane has disappeared. The USA sends the U.S.S. Defiance, skippered by Captain Matt Colter to see if the can find the plane. The Soviets counter by rushing an Akula class attack submarine in the hand of young Captain Sergei Markova to search for signs of the plane beneath the Canadian pack ice.

The race to find the down plane is set. With all of the technological might of East and West racing to icebound Davis Straits. Tensions are high and and so are the stakes. The narrative keeps you turning pages as the showdown unfolds with the very fate of humanity hanging in the balance. This book is a fast read and would make an exciting movie.

This review is from: Under the Ice (Paperback)
This book started out with great suspense, a plot filled with twists, and a seemingly unrelated Intuit Indian. Henrich then wove it into a good story, about the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war.
Some of the characters are stock from spy novels that have been there before example unstable Russians. There is some good character development on some of the characters, and slight development on others. There are several pages on a sonar mans toothache, which serves no purpose to the plot.

With these shortcomings the book was still very intersting and the final confrontation left you wanting. It was as if the book should have had another chapter to wrap up important details.
I will try one more of his books, hopefully he will finish that one.

5.0 out of 5 stars IN THE TRADITION OF ICE STATION ZEBRA, September 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Under the Ice (Paperback)
This story caught me by complete surprise! It's one of the most original plots in quite awhile. In a way, it reminded me of a technothriller version of the classic movie, THE GOD'S MUST BE CRAZY. I enjoyed the details on Inuit life--it's apparent Henrick did his homework. By combining this narrative w/ a fast moving nuclear showdown story line, this novel offers non-stop action in a unique environment, much like one of my favorite stories of all--ICE STATION ZEBRA. Give this one a try, you won't be disappointed.
