Editorial Reviews

UNDER THE JASMIN TREE (1968) & SPACE (1969) by the Modern Jazz Quartet (a 2-on-1 CD)
Two albums of high-class improvisational bebop recorded by Atlantic Records legends the MJQ while on secondment to Apple. With their unique line-up of piano, vibes, bass and drums, the Quartet brought old-style tuxedo excellence and cool organic jazz to the Apple catalogue.

This Remastered CD includes one Bonus Track:
• ‘Yesterday’ / previously unreleased version of The Beatles’ classic

5.0 out of 5 stars Apple Records brings jazz to a rock audience November 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This re-issue includes both of the MJQ albums that Apple produced. I have everything that MJQ has issued on record, most on both vinyl and CD. Vinyl is better, BTW, but I digress. "Space" was my first exposure to MJQ and as such has a special place in my heart and is my favorite. "Jasmin Tree" is probably the better album overall. Both are good. And if you like these, realize that they are unique, not only MJQ unique, but Apple unique, and history of rock n' roll unique. Seminal recordings both, all in one well priced package. And if you like these, try "Blues on Bach" and "Tribute to Connie" which would serve to round out a representative sample of the enduring legacy of this the most successful (in terms of numbers of people who saw them live as well as the most years together) Jazz quartet in history. Why bother? Because they swung like crazy, had extraordinary empathy for each other, and played with a complexity that belied their typical understatement. Listen to the solos of Milt Jackson, how Connie Kay supported him with the most musical drums in jazz, the counterpoint of John Lewis on piano, and the rock solid base provided by Percy Heath (on bass). They were a class act and are much missed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Half and Half January 28, 2011
Format:Audio CD
In 1968, the LP, Under the Jasmin Tree, introduced me to MJQ. I soon obtained other recordings of this unique chamber jazz ensemble, but while all were very good indeed, none had the spark of this first album, and I purchased the remastered CD in 1993. This album was merely 35 minutes in duration. The second half of this present compilation, Space, does not match the verve and originality of the first. Venus is too spacey, Mars is just OK, the adagio of Concerto de Aranjuez was and remains overdone, and this version is not especially good. Indeed, the best track of the second half is Here's That Rainy Day, insufficient at the time of the original release to obtain it. However, now that the two recordings are combined and a properly long album results, I do recommend it. That Apple Records and the Beatles brought the Modern Jazz Quartet to us young hippie rockers must be acknowledged in jazz history. Under the Jasmin Tree alone, or together here, is wonderful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent late sixties jazz fusion February 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This twofer represents MJQ's tenure at the Beatles' Apple Records label. This is one fine example of the quality music that was being released aside from the Beatles own monumental work. Highly recommended.
