5.0 out of 5 stars Before They Were Rock Stars April 28, 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
4 of the songs on this cd were on the original release of this album. Victory Records then bought the rights and added two songs that were on some split 7inches.
This is where it all began. Connecticut hardcore. Where every show was a prison riot waiting to happen, and where Slipknot fans were nowhere to be seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars hardcore at it's finest July 10, 2003
By mike
Format:Audio CD
ok. yes some of these songs were better produced on satisfaction. yes it is short. bottomline is this is an independent release. if all u are looking for is slick production by ross robinson than you are into the wrong kind of music and need to stop looking at this cd. hatebreed is an incredible band. their live show is like none other i have seen. this cd catches hatebreed at theitr rawest. ifu know hatebreed, like hardcore and supportindenedent releases, even if it was rereleased by victory, than get this album. appreciate this album for what it is. life changing hardcore. these guys have paved a road for hardcore in mainstream music. don't forget their roots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great music, very poor sound quality April 16, 2001
By Daniel
Format:Audio CD
Most people who see this would think that it's Hatebreed's new album, but it really isn't. It's just a re-release of their older material from WAY back in their early days. While the first song starts off in the typical Hatebreed fashion, the sound quality is just really bad, it almost sounds as if it were recorded in one of the band member's garages(it probably was, but I'm not too sure). Some of the album's highlights are the title track "Under the Knife" and the first track "Smash Your Enemies". The fifth track "Severed", is probably the slowest Hatebreed song I've ever heard. So if you're a big fan of them, go out and get it, but if you're someone who wants a good-sounding cd, I'd recommend you listen before you buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful stuff, people September 15, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Hatebreed clearly had just one task in mind when making their debut, 1996's "Under The Knife": To make some of the most powerful music you have ever and will ever hear. And there's no two ways about it -- most bands would probably find that to be a nearly impossible goal, but Jamey Jasta and Co. achieved it without even breaking a sweat. They did so by filling these seven tunes with simplistic yet biting guitar licks, occasional, fiery thrash runs, guttural bass rumbles, pounding drums, venomous vocals, really memorable lyrics, adherent grooves, punishing breakdowns, slamdanceable choruses, basic song structures, short song lengths, gritty-sounding production, and an excellent live energy. (Seriously, this album is so darn raw that its title is very well deserved because it sounds like the band members could have recorded the whole thing like their lives depended on it -- e.g. at knifepoint.) Listeners who are in search of technical, progressive, and thought-provoking music with radio-friendly singles, poppy hooks, guitar solos, or even one trace of melody...well, they should just look elsewhere. But those who crave a batch of extremely potent, brutal, primal, aggressive, viscerally satisfying, and completely unbridled and frills-free old-school hardcore should pay close attention to "Under The Knife." This was a very solid and arresting debut, and a promising precursor of future success and other good things to come from this soon-to-be legendary Connecticut-based quintet. It all begins with "Smash Your Enemies" (geez, even the song titles give you a rush!). Read more ›

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT SONGS, POOR RECORDING July 5, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
HATEBREED is incredible -- song structure, lyrical themes, breakdowns. The "Under the Knife" EP captures the aforementioned components well but retains the all-too-familiar overloaded recording associated with bands on the rise. Pick up HATEBREED's "Satisfaction is the Death of Desire" if you don't already have it. If you are a dedicated fan, buy "Under the Knife." In either case, you'll end up bruised. Mark my words.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kind of short but still good March 4, 2002
Format:Audio CD
Hatebreed "Under the Knife" is a pretty good hardcore CD. My only complaints are the short length (only 7 songs)and the poor sound quality (its really really bad)Two of the songs were redone on the SATISFACTION IS THE DEATH OF DESIRE album and they were done much better. The best song on this album is Under the Knife and is a fan favorite live. I WONT LIVE MY LIFE UNDER THE KNIFE!

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh. We all start somewhere.... September 9, 2013
By Roarin1
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I just don't care for this CD. I've got most of their others, but this one is just poor quality in general. They're one of my favorite bands, but unless you like the sound of something that was recorded in someone's garage, don't spend your money here.
