5.0 out of 5 stars Dave Murphy is a musical genius!, January 5, 2001

I was introduced to Dave's music by my boyfriend who became a friend of his a few years ago in NJ. When we first started dating, he played Dave's cd (Under the Lights) for me and remember thinking to myself that the music splattered all over MTV and the radio truly lacks talent like his. Sure there are musicians whose soulful voices I admire (Adam Duritz from Counting Crows, James Taylor, etc), but there is just something about Dave's insight and true-to-life lyrics backed up with his soothing voice that makes him stand apart. You will not be disappointed with this cd, I assure you. It rarely leaves my cd player and every song is equally good. Very thought-provoking and very real. You'll be a better person for experiencing his work...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh New Music, January 3, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Under The Lights (Audio CD)
After hearing the Dave Murphy Band at a small coffeehouse in Madison, NJ, I fell in love with the acoustic guitar and meaningful lyrics. Songs such as "Under the Lights," "The Bottom," and "Save Me," make you want to hit repeat on your CD-player and listen for hours. This is a must have for any fans of folk-type music.

Hey there. I just wanted to ask all people to PLEASE buy that album - " UNDER THE LIGHTS " - :*)
It has some of the most powerful songs I have ever heard!
I got to see Dave and his band perform live at the Sweet Dreams Cafe in Madison, NJ a few months ago and I was truly amazed by their songs. I think Dave as an artist has the potential of being a great inspiration to everyone who loves that kind of music! I highly recommend this album !!! Also if you get the chance to see him perform live, try and get his "new" release called " Things I cant forget " - it has like three new songs on it and also songs taken from " Under the lights " plus a live version of the song " Under the lights ". It is mad cool !!
Cant wait for his second album ! ROCK ON

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave "Change Your Mood" Murphy, September 20, 2001
By

This review is from: Under The Lights (Audio CD)
I saw Dave perform at a church Holiday fund raiser for needy children in Montclair, NJ a few weeks ago and picked up his CD at the performance. His soothing voice combined with meaningful lyric and excellent guitar visibly captivated and moved everyone there; a crowd of young and old alike. Dave's music creates a comtemplative and relaxing mood from which you can relate any emotion that you might be feeling in a positive way. At the age of 44 and having listened to just about everything you can imagine (yes, I went to Led Zeppelin concerts not to mention Pink Floyd, YES, ELP, KISS, Alice Cooper and did I mention Jethro Tull) I want to say that I have never heard music with such a deep and moving message. Dave voice sounds similar to Tom Petty yet much smoother with lyric that is on par or beyond let's say the context of Simon and Garfunkel or Joni Mitchell. He is an undiscovered talent that deserves more recognition and support. I can say with the utmost conviction that it is impossible for anyone not to love his music. Please support this artist, buy his CD and then hope for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something from the heart, May 25, 2001

I had the priviledge of meeting Dave and seeing some of his shows during my stay in the US as an au pair.

Never had I heard a CD that touched me the way his did. It felt like there was someone out there who knew exactly what I felt, and what I was going through. His CD opened my eyes to what is really important, and that no matter what you are going through in life, there is always something worth living for at the end of the day.

I remember the first night I was listening to his CD, I was thinking to myself: "Just another commercialized CD from an unknown artist." Needless to say I fell in love with the CD.

Being back in South Africa, most of my friends got a copy of his CD for Christmas. They all love his music, and can't wait for the second album to be released. Neither can I!!

His CD is one of those that never leaves my CD player, and will always be a favorite of mine.

Do yourself a favour, get this CD and just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Musical Raymond Carver, January 25, 2001
By
Edwin (No, I don't think so) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Under The Lights (Audio CD)
I didn't say it; I would never make it a point to evoke Portland prose writers. A reviewer stated that David E. Murphy is a musical Raymond Carver.

These songs are about getting by, "Dance in the Rain," "Planet of Pain," holding on, "The Bottom," "Wish I Could Tell You," and taking off, "Don't Cry Now," and the title track, "Under the Lights."

With Rob Wolf on guitar, who has played and toured with folk luminary Jack Hardy and Marc Muller on dobro and madolin, who has toured with Shania Twain, and worked on albums for such muscians as Brandford Marsalis, and Mindy Jostyn, Murphy's accompanyment is first rate!

Under the Lights was a top 12 winner for December '99 in Performing Songwriter magazine.

This one is a gem, worth picking up.
