4.0 out of 5 stars engaging and interactive, perfect for tactile toddlers
This & the other Magic Windows Touch & Feel books are my highly tactile 16-month-old son's VERY favorite books (well, it's a toss-up between these and the "That's Not My..." series). He loves to look at the bright colors and feel all the different textures, not to mention notice the changing pictures and "reveals" when I pull out the center panel of each page for him...

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars good textures, bad design
The textures in the book are great. My daughter loves to feel them, but the pull out windows just make the book difficult for us to enjoy. We have other touch and feel books that are great, but I don't think we would recommend this one.

This & the other Magic Windows Touch & Feel books are my highly tactile 16-month-old son's VERY favorite books (well, it's a toss-up between these and the "That's Not My..." series). He loves to look at the bright colors and feel all the different textures, not to mention notice the changing pictures and "reveals" when I pull out the center panel of each page for him.

This series has a much wider variety of textures than most touch and feel books -- not just the usual smooth, soft, and rough, but also slippery, sticky, bumpy, etc. It's also blessedly free of the usual "scratch & sniff" page, which usually gives me a headache.

I'd give this 5 stars except that the inner tab panels are very difficult to pull out, even for me, and will probably still be too difficult for him when he's 3 or 4 and will be moving on from this kind of book. Also because of the moving parts and assembly of materials, it's not the most durable book -- my toddler only gets to play with it when I'm with him, as I'm afraid he'd destroy the book and/or choke on parts he pulled off if left with it unsupervised in his crib or playpen.

Aside from Llama Llama Red Pajama, this is one of my 1yr young daughter's favorite books.

PROS
1. Many different textures for your child to feel. My daughter is entranced by the squishy-rubbery feel of the octupus.
2. Very durable - pages are tough and thick.
3. Easy for your child to turn the page.
4. Intentionally designed for the object of focus to be the textured item in the center. My daughter comes to look for them at each turn of the page.

CONS
1. Only one - the inserts are a bit difficult to pull out and put back in.

SUMMARY
Buy the book. Your child and you will not be disappointed. I like this idea as while your child is playing with the texture you can read to them the text on the page. A great way to hold the child's attention. My daughter comes to look for these books every night.

My son has three of the magic window touch and feel books, and loves them all. They are better than other touch and feel books because: a. They offer more types of textures and b. they have a bit of mystery to them. He loves them so much that he carries them around with him.

My daughter loves this book, and so do I! The textures on the pull-out pages are great, and it's a great intro to sea life.

my kids love the magic window series, but like most of the reviews cant pull and push back the tabs. at 18mos, they've also destroyed some of the pages, so def keep them out of reach unless an adult is around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing concepts and pictures., January 7, 2008
This review is from: Under The Sea (Magic Window Books (Running Press)) (Board book)
I really like the Magic Windows books b/c they incoporated both touch and seeing into a book. I will caution people though that you will want to watch the suggested age range on this one. I probably bought it a little early for my daughter (2 years old) b/c she pulled one of the pages out really easily. I would suggest it for 3 and older or just to keep it put up and read it while you are around to help your child pull the pictures out. I love how colorful the book is and it really does a nice job w/the whole "touch and feel" thing.

We own several Magic Windows books and this is my favorite. The textures are really unique and the colors are vibrant. My daughter loves pulling the tab to reveal the answer to the question, "what am I?" asked on each page. We have a fun time with it.

The textures in the book are great. My daughter loves to feel them, but the pull out windows just make the book difficult for us to enjoy. We have other touch and feel books that are great, but I don't think we would recommend this one.
