This review is from: Under the Milky Way (Audio CD)
fortunately or not, if there is any one song that the church are known for, it is 'under the milky way'. a terribly enchanting song that brought the band, however briefly, into the top 40 spotlight back in '87-'88. of course, that song was just one of the puzzle pieces to the masterful album 'starfish' where guitarists koppes and willson-piper wove their symphonic-sounding six-string's around kilbey's dreamy sing-speak travelogue.this cd-single has for years been one of the most sought-after items for devoted fans. while 'perfect child' is an excellent church b-side, it is available elsewhere (namely the b-sides compilation 'a quick smoke at spot's'). the other two songs command the attraction here: 'musk', with its middle-eastern lush wash of ploog's drums and clambering but shimmering riffs, takes us to the bazaars, temples and baths of a land (and time) unknown to virtually anyone but mister kilbey--that is, until we visit with him; then there's the light and wistful 'warm spell' that takes us to the summer house where we breeze through rooms 'filled with strangers' pity' and others like the one that contains the narrator's father's piano that 'dreams of the sun'. in sum, these are classic church b-sides to a single (and album) all about dreaming and traveling. though 'musk' and 'warm spell' are a bit darker and lighter, respectively, than the whole of 'starfish', they handily show off the experimental side of the church: the side that pushes the musical envelope and expands the boundaries of our journies--truly and terribly enchanting. |
