If you suffer from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, rheumatism, memory impairment, migraine, irritible bowel disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinsons, Epilepsy, Tourettes Syndrome, Autism, ALS, or Alzheimer's you may have Lyme Disease.

This DVD follows numerous Lyme Disease victims and explores the political controversies surrounding this devastating Disease, which is called "The Great Imitator," along with it's more easily detected and treated brother, Syphilis.

Some of the Lyme patients in the video persevered to the utmost, despite denial of coverage by insurers and denial of treatment by health care providers. Amazingly, some of them recover, with extended treatment, by physicians more concerned with patient outcomes, than profit.

The current, officially accepted Lyme Disease testing and treatment guidelines, adopted by the Infectious Disease Society of America are exposed as a greedy fraud, which has caused horrendous unnecessary suffering and enormous costs to our nation.

Under Our Skin exposes the corrupt, inexcusable financial conflicts of interest, of the arrogant dishonest Infectious Disease Society of America panel, which ignores numerous published peer reviewed scientific studies and adopted inadequate, low sensitivity Lyme Disease testing criteria. Financial conflicts of interest exposed, included financial relationships with Lyme vaccine manufacturers and patents on Borrelia strains used by testing laboratories.

Unfortunately, health insurance companies profit by using these inadequate diagnostic criteria, to avoid diagnosing and treating patients, infected by Lyme Disease. The presently adopted testing criteria miss about as many actual Lyme Disease infections as they find.

I had Lyme for 18 years and was only diagnosed 3 years ago. I have researched and read like crazy about Lyme disease and co-infections since my diagnosis. This film helped me realize how much we all go through. It was wonderful to put faces to all the well-known figures in the political world of Lyme disease; the wonderful LLMDs. I loved how they spoke to one of the leaders of the IDSA, the group who created the horrible guidelines that are ruining Lymeys' lives!!! This film had educational info that is helpful to everyone. It is so hard for people who do not have Lyme to understand. This film helped my family and will help your friends also. I cried several times the first time I watched it and had to stop the film before I could continue.

A dear friend since childhood passed away in June 2009 from having Lyme Disease.
This DVD helped me to understand all that he went through, and I pray that it will be able to help others dealing with the same terrible illness. Doctors need to stop saying it is all in our heads, and actually DO something about what people are going through.

The multi-award winning 2009 documentary 'Under Our Skin' describes a modern medical nightmare that affects millions today in the US. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is spread to humans thru the bite of a tick commonly (and increasingly) found in woods and grasslands, particularly in Northeastern US. The movie profiles a number of patients who are afflicted with chronic Lyme disease and the brave and expert doctors who have had to 'fight the system' to get their patients the correct treatment. The number of people being diagnosed is increasing and the disease itself is becoming increasingly hard to diagnose and treat.

The film describes both the pathology of this baffling disease and the corrupt, money-driven politics which have kept countless patients from being able to access proper, effective treatment. About 20-30% of those who are diagnosed with Lyme infection and treated quickly with the current (inadequate) standard of medicine will often become extremely sick months or even years later. Although the blood-markers that identify Lyme (regarding tests devised about 40 years ago) are long-gone by that point, the leftover components of the original bacterial infection have remained present in tissues, mutating over time and becoming active later. At this point the condition becomes much more difficult to treat effectively, but it can be done. The disease causes a wide variety of painful syptoms in those who are afflicted, first attacking the central nervous system and then progressing.

The disease causes extremely painful symptoms - joints, muscular-skeletal, skin, nerves etc. It affects the brain and central nervous system as well. There are effective treatments (long term heavy duty antibiotics) that do produce good results with many of even the worst cases.

We live in an area of endemic Lyme and other rikettsial diseases. Lyme is difficult to diagnose, but the presence of ticks/tick bits is pretty definitive. Many physicians don't have the time to study all of the areas of medicine in an ongoing fashion and rely heavily on professional societies/studies. And sometimes those societies and studies are either inadequate or just wrong. this DVD follows several people who struggled with the disease and even more frustrating, with the profession that often did not take them seriously.

As a retired mid-level provider (nurse practitioner) I am more than familiar with the difficulties of really hearing what the patient is telling us and following up in an ethical and effective manner. The time committment for the practitioner is often overwhelming, but it is a necessary part of effective, ethical practice.

I have good friends whose experience validates those on this DVD, and I have had my own experience of being blown off by my primary care physician, "because the studies say you don't need to . . . " (fill in the blanks). this DVD also addresses the nature of some of the studies.

While things are improving and one is seeing more and more information on Lyme in the public venue, there's a long way to go. this DVD may keep you awake at night.
