On Ballard Island, an island plagued with a supernatural history, the death of a wealthy merchant sets off a frenzy of speculation, theories and superstition as to the creature that claimed his life. Little does the Island know, one of the most respected individuals in town is seeing through a plan years in the making. Tim Sullivan, the local Sheriff, tries to unravel the clues while dealing with the supernatural overtones of the case. Enter the local psychic and a renowned Professor, who each try to track down the culprit as the moon waxes and wanes. Great First Novel for Sheridan,

Pat Sheridan's book boasts snappy dialogue between interesting characters in a fun and exciting setting. It merges horror principles, pop culture references, and a love of small town Rhodes Island life into an exciting thrill ride of plot twists and turns. I look forward to more adventures of the Sheriff Tim and the Professor. As a first book, it shows great promise for future works. As the first book of a series, it built the foundation for fan loyalty. It was pulpy and fun, in the best sense.
Criticisms. There is a tendency to over explain the environment and some of the behind the scenes feelings of the characters. If one can overlook the few pages in which this happens, the book as a whole is highly entertaining. My biggest criticism was in regards to the back cover art - I couldn't easily read the T-shirt wordage. Lots of squinting was involved. Also, initially I had no clue why the back picture was the one the author chose. However, once I'd read about the Professor, I understood the picture choice. I thought the editing was extremely well done. This made me extremely happy. Yes indeed. It was great to just be able to read and not have to internally edit the text - I think most of the modern authors I read could really really use Pat's editing team. Lastly, in regards to the content of the book the following points come to mind: Vincent Price rocks - Pat obviously agrees. Favorite dialogue exchanges - Shakespeare vs Michael Jackson's Thriller I hope you enjoy it!

I just re-read this book around Halloween and it's a great, quick read. There's a lot of action and suspense. The setting is quite familar to those living in southern New England. I recommend this book for anyone interested in a good werewolf tale.
