Book Description

June 3, 2004
"Under Peace Rising: Poems in English, Spanish and French" is a series of short literary spins spiralling the big concept of world peace. The author says she specifically wrote these peace poems for them to outlive their usefulness. Call the peace poems here word dervishes--self-consuming frenzies and ascensions. Spinning in English along with the bonus French and Spanish, these texts together must be considered an all inclusive language experiment as danceable as the magics of peace redeemed through poems. Merilene M. Murphy (peazritr@comcast.net) is the author of "Under Peace Rising: Poems," with an introduction by Ntozake Shange (whose "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf: a choreopoem" still exudes the forward stuff of its Public Theater and 1977 Obie award winning Broadway beginnings). Translator and musician Maria Elena Gaitan joins the "Under Peace Rising: Poems" team as Spanish translator and Inevitable Press poetry publisher Padraic Cohee joins as French translator. Murphy's signature musicality carries in these poems. Throughout the trilingual texts, this poet playfully releases words from static inutility to purposeful invocation.
