The true story of Franny Basilio (Amanda Plummer), a woman who is determined to build an independent life for her autistic sister, Rosetta (Megan Follows). Their mother, a faded opera star (Teresa Stratas), is blind to Rosettas exceptional musical talent. Inevitably, her ignorance and desire for adulation poison her relationship with her daughters. Self-obsessed, the fallen diva cannot see the human spirit that lies beneath the placid exterior of her younger daughter Rose.
Strong-willed Franny struggles for 30 years to free herself and her emotionally defenseless but musically-gifted sister from their mother's suffocating influence.
Based on a true-life story from ABCs 20/20. Winner of three Gemini Awards.

Megan Follows shines as Rosie,
This review is from: Under the Piano (DVD)
All too often Canadian movies get left in the dust. They are usually hard to get and don't usually receive the credit they so deserve. This movie, UNDER THE PIANO, featured Megan Follows (an actor who has turned out brilliant performances since she was a child) and Amanda Plumber (yes Christopher's daughter) who is equally as wonderful. This was a thought provoking and often-times difficult to watch movie and a movie that dealt with the human condition. Movies like this tend to get looked over for the Hollywood movies but do deserve our attention.
There is so much talent in Canada and Amazon has the means to promote it. Shelagh Grove Toronto, Ontario

Any opera person will buy this neglected film for Teresa Stratas in a speaking role, and she does not disappoint. Where Stratas had a huge career, her character in the film is a never-was prima donna turned captious voice teacher and utterly failed mother whose rigidity drives one child away and another--a deeply autistic daughter--to attempt suicide. It is not a fun topic and it is not a fun movie, but a sad portrait of a family that cannot quite assemble itself to support its weakest OR its strongest links. Amanda Plummer is quite fine as the elder daughter, and Megan Follows is scarily real as the autistic girl. Hard to say "wonderful" about a film as sad as this, but there it is.

Wonderful!,
This review is from: Under the Piano (DVD)
I have had this movie on VHS for many years and was happy to see it released to DVD. Megan Follows of Anne of Green Gables fame does an excellent job in this moving story of survival, love vs. hate, strength, and shattered dreams. A pretty heavy story, this movie (I feel) is a great time piece that captures a moment in the past very well with the set, costumes, cars etc. My favorite scene is when Megan Follows is riding the food cart at her job - a moment of true bliss for this troubled soul. Great movie. I can watch it again and again.
