Book Description

August 22, 2006
Actor John Carlyle got his big break in 1954. New to Hollywood, the twenty-three-year-old Carlyle was cast as the assistant director of the movie-within-a movie in George Cukor’s A Star is Born. Although Carlyle’s scene was later cut from the film — and his star status subsequently never materialized — the job brought him in touch with Judy Garland, who up until her death fifteen years later was Carlyle’s friend and sometime lover.

Under the Rainbow: tells the story of this rocky but beloved relationship. No longer the great star who first enthralled Carlyle as an adolescent, Garland — like many former headliners in the 1960s — lived an often desperate, hand-to-mouth existence that was eased only by pills and liquor. She turned to Carlyle for support, even with the hope of marrying the openly gay actor. He politely declined the opportunity of matrimony, but remained constant in his adoration of the star for the rest of his life.

The author takes us on a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of gay Hollywood, with an intimate, often hilarious, star-studded memoir of the decline and end of old Hollywood.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

During his acting career of small roles in the 1950s, Carlyle became acquainted with successful performers like Judy Garland and Joan Fontaine (to whom he wrote many letters before she agreed to see him). But he had a special obsession with Garland. "I was like a dog with a bone to become a part of Judy's life." While playing a small part in A Star Is Born, he offered Garland her favorite brand of cigarette, Spud. That brief introduction eventually gained him entrance to her inner circle, and this starry-eyed book reveals his intimacy with Garland during the late 1960s, the declining, drug-fueled period of her life. Unfortunately, any hint of Hollywood debauchery is preceded by a tedious account of his childhood. The narrative is bogged down with details of every acquaintance, roommate and neighbor he encountered. A gay man's life during a homophobic era, coupled with his sycophantic experiences of stardom, might have been interesting in the right hands; instead, the spotlight is on his failed relationships and petty quarrels. Unfortunately, there is little here to attract even the most dedicated film historian. (Oct.)

From Booklist

In this posthumously published autobiography, Carlyle provides a fascinating behind-the-scenes-look at 1950s and 1960s Hollywood in all its glamour and garishness. The actor details his troubled childhood and strained home life but eventually moves on to juicier stuff as he recounts his youthful move to Hollywood and eventual entrance into a frenzied lifestyle of booze, pills, and one-night dalliances and mercurial relationships with prominent male and female stars of the time. Thanks to a generous trust fund, Carlyle never really had to work too hard and so never made it very big in Hollywood, though he did have several smaller roles and managed to travel in prominent circles. His scenes from A Star Is Born were eventually cut, but it was on the set of that film, despite his openly gay lifestyle, that he became romantically entangled with Judy Garland and remained her friend and sometime-lover until her death 15 years later. Packed with anecdotes about his famous Hollywood friends, this intimate, fast-paced memoir will find many readers. Kathleen Hughes

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, October 12, 2006

There's plenty of dish, but it's never malicious. Carlyle is sufficiently realistic about his own shortcomings to earn your trust. It's interesting that a man so seduced by the allure of celebrity does such an effective job describing how bad stardom looks without its makeup. His intimacy with Judy Garland, especially, allows him to share some juicy stories only he can tell. He manages to do so while still remaining gentlemanly. All in all, it's a fascinating, detailed account of a bygone era, by a man who survived Hollywood with his ego a little bruised but his humanity intact.

Excellent, thoroughly enjoyable book. A shame Mr. Carlyle did not live to see publication of his memoirs. I truly hated putting down this book. When I came to the last chapter I set the book aside and forced myself to not finish the read, as I knew I would miss his tales. Even sans the Garland anecdotes, Mr. Carlyle's life was fascinating reading; however, the one odd note is Joan Fontaine's attitude throughout. That girl needs to relax! A delightfully bitter-sweet story. Bravo, Mr. Carlyle, for a life well lived!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reading, December 25, 2007
This review is from: Under the Rainbow (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. I liked John Carlyle immediately into the first pages. I thought he was very honest about his life. He certainly had a more interesting life than most, particularly that it had a Hollywood twist. He sure never had any good roles or parts that I could see, but he never tried that hard to me. I wish he had told more and in more detail about his homosexual conquests if you would call them that-but as has been said previously, he was gentlemanly in his writings. Sometimes you weren't sure exactly what he was saying so you have to decide for yourself and he sure uses some big words (at least for me). But I enjoyed the local flavor of which locales I am all familiar with and I was right there with him in all his travels far and wide. I was very disappointed that there weren't more photos. I guess he never kept any. I REALLY would have liked to see photos from his youth up to the last days. That was real disappointing. But I think this book is going to be a keeper on my bookshelves, and that is saying a lot-because most are given to the library afterwards. In a postscript of my own, you can see his gravesite at <www.findagrave.com>. He's in good company there.
