Book Description

Under the Robes: Killer History Examines What Really Happens In the Supreme Court
Under the Robes is another installment of the bestselling Killer History series. In this collection of short essays, we explore a few of the major decision makers on the Supreme Court as well as a few of the landmark cases.
Disclaimer, if you are more comfortable with a politically correct examination of the historical record, you may prefer another book. However, if you can appreciate the lighter side of history, can laugh at the human bias, and frailties of historical figures then you are in the right place. If you prefer your history dull and boring then this is not the book for you.

However, if you can appreciate the connection between humor and history then you are in the right place!

Why should you read this collection? Perhaps you are interested in learning more about what really happens in the Supreme Court and cannot bear the thought of wading through a boring historical tome filled with case law.

Perhaps you had the good fortune of being selected for some high position in the US government such as the Vice Presidency and your knowledge of the Supreme Court is limited to one case that has broad appeal to your political base. Hey, no one wants to have some lefty journalist make you look bad right?

Under the Robes: A Killer History Examination of What Really Happens in the Supreme Court is a collection of funny historical essay. Nothing is off limits, and we hope you will enjoy yourself as much as we did preparing the collection for your review

Under the Robes is another Killer History book in the approachable style of Marek McKenna; this one is about the Supreme Court. Not being a big history buff, I bring my wide-eyed innocence to these enjoyable books and let Marek tell me some stories - and boy, you can't make this stuff up! I particularly enjoyed hearing about Thurgood Marshall and about some of the landmark decisions over the years that made this country what it is. Mr. McKenna manages to discuss some very controversial decisions as history without stepping on anyone's toes, which is a major accomplishment in itself. I'll read this again, and I'll recommend it to all my history-loving friends. I don't know why all these history fans end up hanging around with me, but there we are; it's nice to have something to contribute when I talk to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bringing history alive! February 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Dr McKenna's books are so well researched that I feel like I've finished a course in American history each time I read one. However, he brings history alive in a way that none of my professors in college ever did. (Where was this man when I was in college???) Under the Robes is a riveting look at the Supreme Court and its inner workings...all the things you were never told before. Organized well, the book is easy to read and understand and holds your attention. One of several in the Killer History series that I have read, I can't wait for the next. I highly recommend this book to both the new and established student of American history.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FUN AND EDUCATIONAL READ February 22, 2013
By David
Format:Kindle Edition
If you have ever wondered what the court is all about and why it is so important now you can find out. The writer is a real history professor and knows how to write like a real person. He makes it understanding and fun. He brings out the silliness that happens when things are so serious that people lose their perspective. Professor McKenna keeps his perspective and you learn what the court is all about and some of the craziness that has been going on for two hundred trees are. You will not regret this read and it will make you a champ at supreme court Trina.

2.0 out of 5 stars not for adults September 11, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Mr McKenna's series is obviously for the younger set, and even at that, it is woefully short on details but long on liberal opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre for high school education March 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This book on S.C.o.t.U.S. is a nice little quick read on this legal body which should satisfy any high school student desiring an almost funny run through of the more well-known cases and characters of this esteemed institution as current as the "Affordable Care Act" decision. Intriguingly, the author dedicates his effort to that figure of high intellect and refined taste, Sarah Palin.
