Editorial Reviews

"The Michelangelo of the Deep Sea," the "American Cousteau," pioneer, innovator and record-breaker are just some of the words used to describe Al Giddings, four-time Emmy Award winner and one of the world's most accomplished and renowned underwater director-producer-cinematographers. Drawing from more than 30 years of deep sea diving experience-and quite possibly the most hours underwater of any human being-Giddings shares stories and scenes from a lifetime of undersea film adventures. With unprecedented access to his one-of-a-kind library of underwater footage, featuring countless television specials, documentaries, groundbreaking IMAX undersea films, and Hollywood movies like Titanic, The Abyss and The Deep, WLIW New York President and General Manager Terrel Cass speaks one-on-one with the legend to discover the fearless genius behind his breathtaking aquatic images

4.0 out of 5 stars Interview with Al and clips from his life August 29, 2013
Terrel Cass interviews Al and watches video clips at his ranch near Pray, Montana that he moved to in 1984 to relax between jobs. Items discussed include business partner Leroy French, building cameras for underwater, filming Sharks Treasure 1973, filming the Deep 1977, filming IMAX Whales 1998, filming from a JIM suit Dr. Earle's untethered dive 1979, filming hydrothermal vents with Bob Ballard 1979, filming Forbidden Depths 1997 off Cuba, filming Never Say Never Again 1983, filming The Abyss 1989, filming IMAX Titanica and Titanic Treasure Of The Deep 1992, filming Cameron's Titanic 1997, filming Great White Sharks with/without shark cages, Leroy French's shark attack, his favorite spot Palau Islands, filming at night for better color, and his new hobby of restoring vehicles. A poster for IMAX Galapagos 2002 is shown in the background but not directly discussed.

There is a bonus program of approximately the same length called Underwater Adventures, which features extended footage of what we have seen to some degree, plus some we haven't: whales, seals, otters, sea lions, dolphins, sharks, snake divers, Palau cave diving, reef life, kelp forest, USS Saratoga CV-3 wreck Bikini Atoll, JIM suit, Cuba, Ballard and Titanic.

There is a 4 disc gift set available that includes this disc.

There is a world of difference between this show and Nova: Visions Of The Deep 1983. The technology has improved tremendously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maestro of Underwater Photography..!! August 7, 2009
I first met Al Giddings back in 1980 when I was a Member of the Board of Directors and a Diver with Project Tektite, a marine research group based in San Francisco.
Al is a master when it comes to underwater photography. While I have not yet viewed this DVD, I'm sure it is up to the usual high standards like everything else Al has photographed. Al has also worked on Hollywood movies (a James Bond I think) and numerous documentaries. He is recognized in the industry as one of the finest underwater photographers. I look forward to seeing this DVD.
