Every note
I'm a long time Alpert fan, but only discovered this CD recently. I suppose he's done better records, but I have to agree with a comment made by Miles Davis, "You hear three notes, and you know it's Herb!" No one plays a trumpet quite like Herb Alpert. I think even if Herb published a recording of nothing but practice and improv, I'd still love every note.

Bad Collaboration
First of all, I can't believe this CD hasn't been reviewed. I have been a Herb Alpert fan since his first album with the TJB. He's certainly one of the all time great trumpet players. Bad Collaboration, September 13, 2007
This review is from: Under a Spanish Moon (Audio CD)
First of all, I can't believe this CD hasn't been reviewed. I have been a Herb Alpert fan since his first album with the TJB. He's certainly one of the all time great trumpet players. I have also been especially impressed with his taste in music, not only the music he chose to perform, but the many great artists he chose for his A&M label. His later fusion jazz was certainly interesting, and some of it was quite good and musical. The man can also arrange music very well. So what's the problem here? For some reason known only to Herb, he collaborated on this and a couple of other albums with one Jorge Del Barrio. Judging from this and a couple of other outings, this is the one time Herb's tastes went astray. Barrio writes really bad music and arrangements. He collaborated with Lani Hall (Herb's wife) on her last album of Brazilian music. Lani was the wonderful lead female singer with Brazil 66, but this last outing with Del Barrio in control was a disaster. I bought it, listened twice, and sold it in disgust. Back to this CD, it is a decidedly mixed bag with only 3-4 really good numbers. Sting's Fragile is nicely done, as is Keith Jarrett's My Song. For me these are the two highlights. I Need You and Zamba are interesting and well played as well. However the featured Suite by Del Barrio entitled Under a Spanish Moon is simply awful, definitely not musical, and far from the typical good music I expect from Herb. Oh well, his track record is still hard to beat, but this outing is just weirdly uneven, and his decision to link up with Del Barrio is, I think, his one big mistake in a long career of making great music.
