PreS Up - From Katherine Paterson's foreword describing the dream of Jella Lepman and the history of the International Board on Books for Young People to the biographical paragraphs at the end, this collection of artwork by award-winning illustrators celebrates the world of children's literature. Thirty-three talented artists have donated their work to support IBBY, and the resulting volume includes internationally recognized artists and those known only within their own countries. Several are Hans Christian Andersen nominees or winners. The familiar styles of Anthony Browne, Peter Sís, Rosemary Wells, Marie-Louise Gay, and Trina Schart Hyman are mixed with offerings by Baba Wagué Diakité from Mali, Ange Zhang of China, Belgium's Carll Cneut, and Noemi Villamuza of Spain. Using mediums as diverse as their nationalities, the artists have illustrated traditional rhymes, riddles, games, songs, or their own words. In some cases the words are a part of the art. The text appears in the native language and in English. Each high-quality picture is complete in itself. Readers of all ages will appreciate the uniqueness of the individual entries and the diversity of all of the selections. This handsome offering is evidence of the universality of children's literature and the eloquence of the picture book.

Gr. 6-12. This beautiful collection features the artwork of children's book illustrators who, together, represent more than 25 countries. Each double-page spread includes a different artist's image accompanied by a poem, nursery rhyme, song, or bit of nonsense that appears in both English and the illustrator's native language. Young children may enjoy paging through and admiring the images, but this will probably appeal most to older kids and teens with artistic aspirations, and to adult collectors of children's literature, who will marvel at work by emerging new talents as well as familiar artists such as Rosemary Wells, Trina Schart Hyman, and Lisbeth Zwerger. Katherine Paterson offers a stirring introduction that discusses IBBY (The International Board on Books for Young People), which will receive a portion of proceeds from the book's sales.
