Book Description

March 2002
Photography Research and Editing by Jo Jackson and Mary J. Hebert. Foreword by Mark A. Emmert, Chancellor. Preface by Laura F. Lindsay and J. Michael Desmond, for the University Commission on the History of LSU. Nestled on a picturesque spot near the banks of the Mississippi River, Louisiana State University is a photographer's dream. From the red pantile roofs and honey-colored stucco of its Italian Renaissance architecture to the "stately oaks and broad magnolias" hailed in the alma mater, the distinct beauty of the campus is unrivaled. Few, however, realize that the history of the state's flagship university is as colorful as the azaleas that adorn its landscape every spring. Through an entertaining marriage of photographs and text, Under Stately Oaks showcases over 140 years of LSU's past and follows the evolution of the tiny Seminary of Learning of the State of Louisiana, founded near Pineville in 1853, into a university of well over thirty thousand students for the twenty-first century.

Thomas A. Ruffin sets the images in historical context and offers fascinating information that will enlighten even the most ardent LSU fan. From the first LSU students in 1860 to the 75th anniversary celebrations of the current Baton Rouge campus in 2001, Under Stately Oaks captures the spirit of the university as never before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific gift book for any LSU grad, July 23, 2002
This review is from: Under Stately Oaks: A Pictorial History of Lsu (Hardcover)
When professional soldier William Tecumseh Sherman brought his military experience and organizational skills to Pineville in November 1859 as superintendent of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy, the seventy students who greeted him found him strict in discipline but approachable and able to put them at ease. The University is now home to more than 31,000 students and it?s doubtful that the chancellor knows many of them by name. A great many graduates, however, will want to peruse this gorgeous volume, both for the well-written text and for the scores of glossy photos. From the Civil War and Reconstruction and the school?s frequent moves to new locations, to black-stockinged coeds dancing during halftime at a 1920 game, to streaking and Tiger Stadium and Mike the mascot, you?ll find it all here.

I really liked the old photos of Tiger Stadium and the campus. I never knew there was a lake behind the greek amphitheatre way back when. I recommend this book highly along with LSU grad Chris Warner's "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football". Both are very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful timely gift, July 18, 2009

When I first received this, I thought it would be all text with a few pictures. I was wrong. There is an ample amount of pictures and some really good history of LSU. I am only familiar with the recent past of LSU (1976-forward), but was very interested to learn about LSU from the beginning (through the Civil War) and depression, WWII and the 1960's. The different directions and the chronological order of buildings and roads were presented in a very nostalgic manner. I had many classes in those buildings and it is nice to understand the history of their namesake and why it's important.
