Editorial Reviews

Review

This old time thriller is so intensely melodramatic that one overlooks the impossible events related. This story moves one to tears, as its author designed it should. This book came out in 1867. Despite its old-fashioned melodrama if you give this book a chance I think you will be glad you read it. It is an outstanding type of its genre. --By Schmerguls

This is a "must read" book. I am suprised that it appears to be relatively unkown. It is the precursor to all of the French Foreign Legion novels and movies that are so much more known today. All I can say is get it, read it and you will not be disappointed. --By JRB Sharpe Fan --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This is a very unusual book. I first saw this title as a movie starring Claudette Colbert and Ronald Coleman. There is significantly more to the book than the movie (over 500 pages of small print). This book was written in the mid-1800's and the writing reflects the style of that period. There is a lot of detail to keep straight but ultimately you will be able to keep track of what's going on. There are many passages written in French so if you have a good command of that language, you'll get even more out of the story.
