3.0 out of 5 stars The ABBA Factor...
Compared to Blackmore's Night's stunning debut, "Shadow of the Moon", this album is a bit of a disappointment. Overall there is too much of a soft sappyness to too many of the songs; the result being that this effort has more in common with Abba than Renaissance music, medieval music, or folk music. If you LIKE Abba, that's not a problem; if Abba isn't your cup...

Ritchie Blackmore has been my favorite guitarist since I first picked up the guitar 14 years ago. His riffs & melodies were so damn creative & original how could you not appreciate him? I was very excited by the first Blackmore's Night cd. It was so different than anything he has done before although underneath his work in Rainbow it started to creep out. I have to say, UNDER A VIOLET MOON was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't sure if they could improve on the first cd, but they did. A truly amazing listening experience. So refreshing! It couldn't have come at a better time, when music nowadays is based on image (thanks to MTV). Even though all the songs on UNDER A VIOLET MOON are excellent my favorite tracks are: Title track, PAST TIME WITH GOOD COMPANY, MORNING STAR, and SPANISH NIGHTS (I remember it well). These are the darker songs on the cd and I think that Blackmore was most at home on those. I hope Blackmore's Night continues to release more material in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Still May Think of You Now and Then, June 19, 2004

Wow! So we have This medieval reniasacne prog rock thing led by the guitar master Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple and this wonderful female vocalist I have never heard of before, Candice Night. A lot of their songs are either influenced or are covers of old reneissance classics. Ritchie does a good job with acoustic guitar and Miss Night does a good job looking beautfiul and singing just as well! Since I'm sort of obsessed with that period histroically it is nice to find a nice rock type band influenced by it!

If you want more, I later discovered Aina: The Days of Rising Doom: the Metal Opera in which Candice Night does some vocal work. I would also check out Fires at Midnight and Past Times with Good Company. Very good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ritchie-This is a Great CD, April 29, 2003

Ritchie Blackmore shifted his musical focus away from hard rock in the late 1990s and started concentrating on his love of Renaissance-era music. He formed Blackmore's Night with his fiancee, vocalist/lyricist Candice Night also recruited other musicians from around the world to combine elements of world music, Renaissance, new age, folk, and rock & roll.

Good CD .... Buy It

5.0 out of 5 stars medieval period was very beautiful., June 3, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Under a Violet Moon (Audio CD)
Many people loved him during his period with Deep Purple and Rainbow. Ritchie Blackmore is an awesome personality, his music, his lyric and his musically charismatic conquered the heart of the rock fans in the 70's and 80's. And now He joins Ms. Candice Night on this pretty medieval album. The result is a huge fascination...the trip to the old medieval time/renaissance era. Miss Night is a very sweet girl and has a good voice. The songs like Past time with good company, durch den wald zum Bach haus, Under a violet moon reminding us on the classical 16th Baroque century. The musical composition on this cd were helped by some german classical experts, Ritchie has known in the good old Deutschland. Ritchie Blackmore is always my favourite guitar player of all time. See ya on your next tour in the old Heidelberg in July, Ritchie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A new sound and a new beginning, April 7, 2004

There are many out there who have expected Ritchie Blackmore's material with Blackmore's Night to be something along the lines of Rainbow or Deep purple, and have been sort of turned off by the whole idea that he is now in a band so different from his past work. But, this is a new band for him. And with a new band comes experimenting with new material, and a whole new group of musicians. Its a new experience, and a chance to express so many other feelings through music. Personally I am a big fan of Blackmore's Night. I own all of their albums, "Under a violet moon" being my all-time favorite. Their music is mystical and capitvating, and it blends the perfect amount of rock with soul soothing melodies. I found their remake of "Self Portrait" to have an amazing touch, and gives a little something extra to the original version. Their live performances are great, they hold very true to what you hear on the albums. I highly recommend this album, and the others, to anyone who likes something just a little bit different. After all, the whole purpose of a new band is to try something new, isn't it? Definitely give it a chance.

I have listened to both Blackmore's Night CD's, and think that this is the best ever. It's great for listening to on long car journey's. I can't wait for the third album, and will get it as soon as it comes out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tight and polished., July 8, 2003
This review is from: Under Violet Moon (Audio CD)
Once "Under a Violet Moon" made it into my CD player, it didn't want to leave. Although there are a few throw-away tunes here, the album overall is quite excellent. Blackmore's Night has filled the CD with less familiar traditionals and several very good original pieces. Even the traditionals are cunningly arranged to elicit a fresh sound, with just enough modern influences to set the band apart from the crowd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are you sure this is Ritchie Blackmore?, March 13, 2001

Ok, no offense to all of the Deep Purple/Ritchie Blackmore/Rainbow fans out there, really. My husband is the biggest Blackmore fan, so when he said that he wanted this CD for his birthday, I of course obliged.

I couldn't believe my ears when he popped the disc in. Hence my title of "Are you sure this is Ritchie Blackmore?" I have been subjected to Blackmore's priors for years, and needless to say, I am NOW a fan!!! This is a long distance from his usual metal style.

I hate to admit it, but I want this CD now. I'm going to have to fight the husband for it. The acoustic on here merely adds to his lengthy list of talents, both solo and w/the various bands he's been with.

I eagerly await the next Blackmore's Night purchases I am about to make. For a not so huge Blackmore Fan...it's FANTASTIC!!

Gorgeous music. I leave both of the Blackmore's Night CDs in my players for weeks at a time. If you love Loreena McKennitt and wish she would hurry up and produce some new music, this CD should satisfy some of your cravings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Role-Playing Music, November 27, 1999
This review is from: Under a Violet Moon (Audio CD)
The title of my review says it all. If your into Role-Playing or simply want to be swept away with great music this is the CD for you. I love this kind of music and I wish there was more of it out there. If your looking for the hard rock of Deep Purple, don't bother. If your after something very different but definately "fantasy-esk", this is super stuff. It's great, I'm asking for his first CD for a gift!
