This book takes place durring World War two. This book is about a young fighter war pilot that is the best plane flier that anyone has seen. While he is flying he gets shot down. He runs for his life. He trys to get into a program that lets him try to escape. I think one of the best parts is when he is trying to climb over the mountain and gets gaught by the gestapo...

Henry was a "boy" who was a fighter pilot that was shot down during World War II behind enemy lines. Due to his perseverence and with the help of many strangers(including French Resistance fighters)who risk their lives, Henry makes it back to his family's farm in Virginia--as a man. This war story includes everything that anyone would want-danger, suspense, adventure, even romance! Don't miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Under a War Torn Sky, September 10, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Under a War-Torn Sky (Paperback)
This book was fantastic. It was very realistic to war. It showed how evil some people can be but then how nice others can be. Henry Forester goes threw it all.Henry is a 19 year old pilot shot down behind enemy lines. He has to survive a lot to make it home. I suggest a tissue when you read it too. But don't get me wrong its an awesome book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My nine year old LOVED, March 24, 2006

My son is nine and I'm always trying to get him to read books. He's fascinated by war and weapons and loves playing the war type video games. He can't put this book down, great and interesting read for him. Also, he gets to learn real history and what war is like from a more real perspective.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books I Have Ever Read, November 30, 2005

OK well I was assigned a free reading assignment in my 9th grade History class and I decided to read this book. From the first page, I was interested in the book and I loved it to death! Henry Forester is shot down over Nazi controlled Europe during WWII and has to get back to saftey which is in England.

He makes his way through Europe and has some of the closest calls with Nazi soldiers and police. This book got me on my toes it was so exciting at points.

I would suggest this book to teens of all ages adn adults! You got to read this book and see how it turns out. I hope my review was helpful to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars An exciting, not too gory tale about WWII, February 24, 2003
By
This review is from: Under a War-Torn Sky (Hardcover)
UNDER A WAR-TORN SKY was so exciting! I loved it because it was always moving at a fast pace; there were no slow moments. There were vivid descriptions of places, but they didn't bog the story down. There was also very good character development in this book; I really got to know all about the characters. Whenever something happened I knew what Henry (the main character) thought or how he felt about it. The writing style was good because it wasn't too fancy and flowery, but it flowed well. It was pretty easy to read, but not too easy and childish. The content was also more mature than the writing (this book is about war, and it might be too intense for younger readers). This book taught a great lesson: "even during desperate times, people can still be kind and helping". Throughout the book, this theme keeps showing up, but it never gets too preachy. I like how the theme was worked into major part of the story; it teaches a lesson, but is exciting at the same time. UNDER A WAR-TORN SKY has a very exciting climax, where you have to keep reading or you'll die from the suspense. The only thing that I didn't like about this book was that the author would get you really attached to a character, and then he/she would die. Whenever someone died Henry would focus on all the good aspects of their character and what a tragedy their death was. Henry would dwell on this person's death until it seemed that they were a real person, and then I would think, "Why did this person have to die? He/she was too good to die in this manner!" I know that this is good; it helps explain that war is a terrible thing, but it was almost too intense for the reader to handle. This book was amazing, though, and I DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone interested in war stories. And for readers who don't like war stories: give this book a try. I think you'll really enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trapped Behind Enemy Lines, May 13, 2002

This review is from: Under a War-Torn Sky (Hardcover)
When Henry's plane is shot down during an air battle (in WWII), he finds himself behind enemy lines with no help. Henry relies on friendly Frenchmen (and women) to make it to safety. The brave helpers risk their lives to save him, and in the end many of them are caught. Henry goes from family to family on his journey to safety. He gets caught by the Nazis, tortured and interrogated, but he still manages to not betray anyone who helped him. All throughout the story, Henry's adventures are described with details, making the reader feel as though they are right alongside Henry. It's a wonderful war story. Under a War-Torn Sky is one of the best war stories I've read.

It's action-packed, and every minute I was reading I found myself holding my breath, waiting to see what would happen. I wasn't disappointed. Some parts are sad, some are joyful, and some are suspenseful. I read the whole thing in one sitting, waiting to see what would happen.

I recommend this to anyone who wants to know about World War II, is interested in planes, or anyone that likes to read adventure stories. I think it would be best for ages 13&up - even grownups would enjoy it! So, if you fit any of those categories, READ THIS BOOK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Under a War Torn Sky, November 11, 2001

This book is about a young American boy who is the co-pilot to one of the American bomber planes back during World War II. His name is Henry Forester. On his 15th mission Henry's plane is shot down over what he believes is France. Henry then begins a long journey through Europe during a very difficult time. This book is an excellent book. Being from a shot-down pilot point-of-view is new and different. That it is written for teenagers also differentiates it. This book shows what happens when an American pilot gets shot down and how hard it is for him to survive in countries who hate Americans. Unlike some books, it doesn't glorify war, it shows how dangerous and terrifying war actually is and how everyone is affected by it. This book is great for all ages but the very young. I thought this book was full of excitement and adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book, February 14, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Under a War-Torn Sky (Paperback)
Henry forester is the main character and/or protagonist of "Under A war-Torn Sky." Henry is trying to navigate his way through enemy occupied France to get back to allied occupied soil. This book is told in 3rd person.

Along the way he meets many giving people. One of these people is Madame, a wealthy French woman who is helping the French resistance escort allied pilots home. The Authors tone in Under a War-Torn sky" was very serious and down to earth.

I don't think the story really had a theme, except to entertain. Over all "Under A War-Torn Sky" was an exciting book. It also always has you on the edge of your seat with it's great elaboration strategies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, November 3, 2005
This review is from: Under a War-Torn Sky (Paperback)
The book I read for my independent reading project was Under a War-Torn Sky by L.M. Elliot. This book is about an American pilot who is shot down while flying with the RAF (Royal Air Force) and his journey to get out of enemy lines. I think that this book was very suspenseful and I would definitely recommend this book for anyone to read. Anyone who likes war, adventure and suspenseful books should consider picking up this book.

This book was very strong in all aspects. The author put in many vivid details that made the book very easy to understand and it wasn't a boring read either. He also put in a lot of suspenseful events that all heightened the story and made me want to keep reading instead of doing something else. The best part was when Henry was on the ground after he parachuted from his plane and then the German Luftwaffe shot at the downed pilots to make sure they didn't survive. Henry had to run from them with a broken leg and not get shot at. That was probably the best part of the book.

The only thing that made me want to put the book down was the few selected settings. The story took place in Germany, France, Great Britain and the United States of America, but the majority of the book was set in Germany and France. A lack of characters also made the book somewhat boring. After the RAF plane was shot down, Hank was one of the only survivors. Further into the book, more characters came into the story and made the book really interesting. This author really knows how to fix mishaps in the story and cover it up with elaborate details and more characters.

Usually reading isn't something I do in my free time. This book changed that because the book was fun and about a topic that interested me. My favorite types of books are usually about war, military or adventure, world war two in particular. If you are interested in the more suspenseful and action packed books, go pick up Under a War Torn Sky at your local library or book store. Reading books on world war two is very interesting because I learn new things from each selected reading. During this book you get to see the perspectives of the French, German, British, and Americans during the world war two time period. This was a very hard and challenging time in history and L.M. Elliot did a good job of making a novel about it.

If I were you, I would go pick out this book. It portrayed the life of American pilot Henry Forester who was fighting for the RAF (Royal Air Force). I would recommend this book for anyone who loves to read or despises reading and has not picked up a good book lately. Right now, my goal is to find other books written by L.M. Elliot.
