Better be Glad two of the Authors are good, March 22, 2011
If it had not been for the first story in this anthology of Western Romances, the book would have earned five stars.
All I know is that Carolyn Davidson better be very glad that Cheryl St. John and Jenna Kernan had their stories to carry her.
The first story by Carolyn Davidson "Abandoned" is quite honestly the worst story I have ever read. It is just so dumb that it makes you want to crumple up the Kindle and toss it in the trash. I think if she had the character say "sweetheart" one more time, I would have been tempted to crumple it.
"Abandoned" is about a woman who has been attacked along with her father and another man. The father, instead of staying to help his daughter, takes off after the other man, presumably to bring him back to help. They both leave the woman to fend for herself against the Indians. She is beaten and cut pretty badly.
So, in rushes the hero who picks her up and carries her back to his wagon train where he proceeds to put her in his wagon and lays claim to her. He doesn't want anyone to look at her because he is jealous and he decides that she will marry him, have his babies and settle in Denver. Now, HE decides all of this and lets everyone know that he is the one in charge and she has no say in the matter whatsoever. The so-called hero is a neanderthal who is full of himself. I mean he believes that if he says something then the woman should listen. UGH! The author had the man call the woman sweetheart 32 times. Double UGH !
Cheryl St. John couldn't write a bad book if she tried. This story is about a young woman who just wants to be loved like she sees in other families. She has been dating Wayne for 4 years and he has yet to ask her to marry him. Then along comes Jack and his part-Indian child. "Almost a Bride" will make buying the book worthwhile.
I had never read any of Jenna Kernan's books so she is a new author for me. I will be looking at her other books since "His Brother's Bride" was so good. It is a story about grief and starting over.
